GP being funny with me!

i saw my gp monday told him about the pain i was having in my knee due to a car accident years ago, i told how how the last few years its gotten worse, baring in mind this is a new gp and monday was the 1st time i had seen him. he said how come you havent been for a proscription in 8months if the pain is so bad? i said because i use off the shelf meds, he examined my knee which you can see just by looking its completly mangled. he said the movemt in it was good and he sees no reason why i should have pain! i know my self how much pain im in iv had it so long its normal to me i cant walk far without been in agony bending etc is painfull! he said to me in dominant voice theese pain killers (Co-dydramol) will deffinatly stop your pain. i have been taking them since monday and they have very little effect! i know he thinks im faking it which makes me feeel sooooooo uncomfatuble its making me very angry! can he refuse to give me a sick note if i say they pain killers arnt working?

you don't need a sick note for the first week of being off sick - if you want one before then they can ask you to pay for it. Self certify to start with and go back and say they are not strong enough, if the next lot they give you doesn't help and you need to be off longer then go back when the end of your self certification period is up.

He can refuse to give you a sick note if he believes you are capable of working. You might be better off trying to see another doctor.

just go back and see him or another one of the gps again....co-dydramol is the usually the standard first line treatment for these sorts of things....may be worth enquiring about an xray or a referral to a physio to see what may be underlying the problem. no point in asking for a sick line if you are able to function on it - more important to see what may be causing the discomfort.
  • are you allowed to change your gp? seems a bit suspisous if you do that tho? he did give me a sicknote for 2 weeks already, he said the pain killers will work and to comeback in 2 weeks to tell him they have but they aint. its they way he said they will deffiantly stop your pain ie hinting end off dont come back.

yes you can simply walk into another practice and ask to register with them....if they are accepting patients then you will have to fill in a few forms and within a few weeks your old notes should be transferred across.

Nothing to say that after being examined by the new GP, you wont get the same response though.

Do know what's actually wrong with your knee ? Have you tried glucosamine?

What is it you are looking for from your GP? Are you simply wanting a sick note to claim benefits or are you asking him to refer you for further investigation and to see an orthopaedic specialist to see if your problem can be cured or alleviated?

I would suggest that if you have been controlling pain with over the counter remedies but it is now worse that perhaps it is time to ask for further investigations.
