Laptop - portable but with decent size screen/keys

  • A macair equivalent would be something like Lenovo ThinkPad X300 as already mentioned by SunnySusie but I think it costs more.

The standard macbook is really nice, you should take a look at that if you like the macair as it is still very portable, slim, long battery etc and you may be able to pick up a deal on the previous gen models now that the new ones are out.

ah, a bit bigger than I was initially thinking. Im going to get one of these. The keyboard is 93% standard and the machine weighs just over 1kg.

oooooh, I have been looking at the Samsung for a while for a family member. Looks very good and a half decent size screen compared to the other netbooks I have seen around which I think the screens are just tiny.

In regards to the Macbook and Mac air the screens are 13.3 on them as well as the Lenovo.

Hi Sunny-Susie, you appear to be 'on-the-ball' and apologies if wrong site but seeking a small 'pocket-job' to take on hols to check e-mails, surf via wi-fi and also play DVD's - good battery life and low price - can you/anyone suggest such a product please ?

Picked mine up yesterday from PCWorld, had to scout around though as they are moving fast and they only seem to have a limited number.

First impressions are very good indeed, loaded office on there, binned the macafee 90 day thing as it is very intrusive and put AVG on.

Seems well built, excellent display, very good keyboard and a decent size even for my fat fingers, the enter key is slightly smaller than I am used to but soon getting used to it.

It was a doddle to set up and get hooked up to my wireless network for the net and LAN. The web cam seems very good quality, the speakers are not brilliant but they are tiny so no surprise.

The battery life seems to be amazingly good, did not drive it into the ground yesterday but I think it will do 5-6 hours on "normal" setting.

The "free" case gives next to no protection for it as it is nothing much more than a cloth envelope so the hunt for a more substatial offering that will actually give ti some level of protection is on - recomendations please!

All in all a top bit of kit!

  • I was excited about the Samsung NC10 until I noticed that it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive.

Have any NC10 owners found this a problem?

Not a problem for me I just hook it up to my network and share a drive off another PC if I need to load any software. You can buy external USB drives for £15-£30 if you really need one.
Once my programs are loaded I very rarely use any drive so it is not really an issue for me, having a drive in there bulks up the dimensions which is why none of the netbooks have CD/DVD drives built in.

  • well I now have one too :)

I dont miss having a CD drive. First off I tend to use USB keys to move things around so a CD writer is redundant these days! GB big usb drives are so cheap these days and much easier to use imo. Secondly most software I use is freely available stuff downloaded from the net.

And like above, you can share a desktop drive on the network to install software you have on CD. Else you could buy a USB drive if the former isnt an option.

So no, I dont miss it at all! My NC10 is wicked!
