Laptop - portable but with decent size screen/keys

I want to get a light/slim laptop which is truly portable, but with decent size screen and keyboard and a reasonably good spec.
XP is preferred.
Decent battery life

Budget around £600

any suggestions? Thanks

I assume you mean a 17 inch screen. These tend to be quite heavy although some companies are developing ultra light thin versions which probably cost a vast amount. Or is 15.4 or 15inch acceptable?

Yep, spot on, would have preferred a 17" but a 15" or 15.4" would be very acceptable
    Thanks
  • ah, a bit bigger than I was initially thinking. Im going to get one of these. The keyboard is 93% standard and the machine weighs just over 1kg. The prob with bigger laptops is that they often turn out to be not as portable as you want. I want something that you can slip into a bag and not notice. 15/17 inch machine tend to require their own case etc.

Just how portable do you want? I know a few people who have learnt the hard way that carrying around a 17 inch 4kg machine is a little more hassle than they thought!

This is my dream light laptop or you may want to consider the mac air, but both are out of your budget? So when going cheaper you need to weigh up what you value most and prob have to compromise a little :(

A 17" laptop is never going to be as portable as a 15" one! You'll have to compromise somewhere along the line.

I'd never use a 17" laptop for carrying regularly, not unless you want a damaged shoulder.

Thank you for your contribution...
I did say that 15" would be very acceptable.

    Ho hum.

    You said earlier:

Hence my post, regarding your oxymoron of preferring a 17" for a light/slim truly portable as in your original post, below....

My first port of call would be to read some comparative reviews, you'll get much better advice and ideas of what to look for IMO.

Also search and read a similar threads on this forum.

£600 will get you a very powerful 15" Dell Inspiron.
  • isofa, thanks again for for your helpful contribution.

Any advice from others? I'm sure I am not alone with this dilemma.
If I had to stretch my budget, how much would I have to pay?

    Thanks.

If only you could fit a 17" screen into a 12" laptop?

    :rotfl:
  • I wouldn't mind working in a smaller screen but the keyboard must be of decent size for prolonged work.

    Is there an AirMac equivalent?
