you could always just wet the dried foot with water & then it would `be' wet - but much better quality
    or
mix it with tinned fish in oil - say 50 % fish & 50% dried food - still vastly superior nutrition than shop sold pet wet food

I have changed my views on a Raw diet since i've been researching etc. I now do not feed my Bengals on wet pet food because as it is processed their poo used to stink, but by feeding mine on raw and Orijen dry their poos should be small and odourless this is going by others in the US feeding theirs on a diet of Raw and Orijen.

If the cats do thrive on this then it will be a lot cheaper then buying tinned or pouched pet food because you either just feed them the meat you intend to cook for your own meals or ask the butcher for offcuts or meat they cannot sell to the public like leftovers you would get when you picked off from a chicken carcass. They should just give you these as they just throw them away but otherwise at the end of the day just go in and ask them if they have any meat they intend to throw away just before they start packing up to close.

I'm also going to get some frozen chicks to see how they go on them.

does anyone have a good link to info about the raw diet? and do you need to supplement their food with anything else, i read that cats need taurine, is this gained through the raw diet?

    thanks
  • Mr Mouse and I would go hungry long before the moglets. We buy them Hills (from vetUK) and Whiskas. The way I see it they ask for so little? Many times have thought ...mmmm..they eat better than us!

Supplement with dry food. I use orijen which is very expensive and you can only get it online, but it's very good. I get mine from Zooplus.

Here is where i get some of mine, your local pet shop may stock it

  • My mother buys whatever is on special offer for her 2 cats and if they turn their noses up then they get offered no wet food for a couple of days - the next lot that goes out gets devoured.
  • If it's any use to anyone - B&M have Iams dry 3kg for £3.99, which retails in the supermarkets at £12.99. I stocked up with 6 bags!
  • Think of Branded cat and dog food as you would branded human food....some of it is just a total rip off, way too expensive and is generally priced higher to accommodate their huge advertising bills.

I have always always always used supermarket own brand cat/dog food that comes in cans.
Your average cat will only need half to one tin a day plus some complete food biscuits.

I believe it is important for cats to have some wet meat with their food....plus the fact, they are meat eaters....fancy eating dry biscuits all your life!!

I have found that the 'special' foods....like Science/Hills/Iams are a complete waste of money and contain far too much junk.

I often think its the M&S food shoppers of the world who buy that for their animals :-)) "Oh well, its the best isnt it?" Errrr no!!

My cost saving tip .... comes from the lady at the PDSA .... recommended substituting some of her meals with sardines or any other oily fish). ..... I just wash off the tomatoe sauce and squish them between my fingers - the cats both love it ......

No need to wash off the tomato sauce as this is the best bit and most cats go crazy for it and prefer that to the fish!!!! :D

On reading through the thread there also seems to be quite a few people feeding tinned tuna regularly. Just to point out that human grade tinned tuna is quite high in sodium/salt which can cause kidney problems when consumed in excess, even the varieties in oil/springwater, so only feed it as an occasional treat ;)

Feeding 'extra food' on top of a complete diet on a regular basis is what leads to obesity in animals ;)

I believe it is important for cats to have some wet meat with their food....plus the fact, they are meat eaters....fancy eating dry biscuits all your life!!

Many cats do just that and lead perfectly happy, healthy, long lives

I have found that the 'special' foods....like Science/Hills/Iams are a complete waste of money and contain far too much junk.

I don't wish to be rude but this is absolute nonsense!!!! (although I do have a particular problem with Iams food, but not for the reason you quote!)

I often think its the M&S food shoppers of the world who buy that for their animals :-)) "Oh well, its the best isnt it?" Errrr no!!

    Again, absolute nonsense!

How or why would you compare it the M&S food shoppers of the world?

Do you know that feeding a good quality diet such as Hill's or Royal Canin is actually far cheaper than the supermarket own brand foods you favour so much? :rotfl:

Not to mention far healthier too ;)
