OH and I aren't having anything!

DD took us out to a posh restaurant for lunch at 2pm as it is my birthday on Monday.

We are still chock a block, having had 3 courses each.

Tomorrow, will be family supper at DS's house. I'm having a nice rest from cooking.

    :rotfl: :rotfl: :D

;) Felines are my favourite ;)
  • This is going to be a great thread for giving me OS dinner ideas :D

I'll add this thread to the weekly Meal Plan thread - you'll get hundreds of ideas there ;)

No problem Penny, I had a feeling there would already be a more appropriate thread, I'm still learning
  • This reminds me that I still haven't posted my plan for this week :o:p

Thursday - chicken, baked potato, veg
Friday - out for dinner to celebrate my birthday :bdaycake: (it was 2 weeks ago, but this was the first time that we could all be together due to the children's busy schedule ;) )

Saturday - broccoli and stilton soup, french bread
    spag bol; Ben and Jerry's

    Sunday - lunch as Saturday
leg of mutton, roast potatoes, HG baked parsnip and carrot

Monday - HG courgette and coconut curry, naan, salad

Tuesday - HG aubergine and mozarella pasta bake

Wednesday - chilli and rice, salad

There are muffins in the freezer, and rocky road and a sponge cake in the tin :T

Have a good week, Penny. x

  • My mum in law said to me about having a weekly menu and at first I thought WHAT ????? but after reading this thread Im re-thinking the idea.

Do you have the same thing every week or do you change it?
and do you stick to it?

    Thanks Sarah xx
Trying to change my life and will:money:
  • Hi Sarah :hello:

I don't have the same thing each week but I do try to have meals based on the same sort of things. ie:

1 x beef: usually chilli / bolognaise alternate weeks (which I cook in bulk and make enough for 4 family meals; so 3 out of 4 times that it's on my plan it comes out of the freezer :D)
1 x pork or lamb: shepherds pie / sausage & bean hotpot / etc (usually made in bulk :p)
2 x fish: fish pie / salmon & mash / tuna jacket / tuna pasta / cod mornay / etc
1 or 2 x chicken or turkey: noodles / curry / casserole / meatballs (made in bulk ;))
1 or 2 x veggie: veggie sausages / egg & chips / sweet potato stew (but I'm still struggling to find enough quick easy veggie meals (that aren't pasta))

Planning in this way means we get a nice balance of different meats throughout the week and the costs (and ingredients needed) week to week stay pretty much the same. :)

I usually do stick to the plan because it's so easy to just get the stuff that's planned out of the freezer the night before, rather than standing there at dinner time, staring into the fridge trying to come up with something else. ;) And, as I usually cook stuff in batches, it's even easier; this week 3 of my planned meals have already been made and just need defrosting and reheating. :D

Sarah, I try to incorporate at least 1 veggie, 1 fish (ideally 2), 1 red meat & 1 poultry/pork meal, the rest being made up of 1 more of either (again trying to vary).
I save all meals on an excel sheet so when I need ideas I can consult that, as well as here. I also note the carb/cheese/egg content of my meals so to get a varied diet. There are great ideas on here- I know angelnikki colour codes her meals, I do too but in a slightly different way. It might be good save your lists for a few weeks to see patterns emerging/ideas/areas for change etc. Good luck, and welcome on in.

Here are some of the veggie meals we have- not sure if these would appeal to you but just some ideas :).
Veggie chilli (kidney beans (and/or other beans), mixed diced peppers, chickpeas, onion (red or white), tomatoes, chilli.)
Veg fritatta (whatever veg you fancy, potatoes, eggs, milk)
Veg curry (eg cauli, potato & pea)
Cauli & broccoli bake (with cheese and breadcrumbs on top)
    Soups
    Stuffed peppers/courgettes/marrows
    Onion tart
    Quiche (any type you fancy!)
    Veg chow mein
Vegetable pies (mushroom, sweetcorn, peas, carrots- or any veg you have in/like in a lovely creamy sauce with shortcrust pastry).
Not sure if this helps but some ideas, that can be quite cheap and also can be bulk made and frozen like some of the other things you make.

PP.....your mealplans always sound scrummy and make my mouth water:D.....with the stilton in the soup...does it actually melt down or do you put in last minute and have it lumpy:confused:

Can I also be cheeky and ask where you get the Mutton leg, how much does it generally cost and how does taste compare with Roasted Lamb leg? Ive used Mutton mince before but not a joint and was good value for money at the time.

  • PP.....your mealplans always sound scrummy and make my mouth water:D Thank you .....with the stilton in the soup...does it actually melt down or do you put in last minute and have it lumpy:confused:I roughly chop the stilton and add it to the simmering soup immediately before serving. It then melts slightly, but leaves small lumps of cheese.

The mutton was from the farmer's market (DH tells me it's shoulder - he does all the roasts, so I can't have been concentrating when we bought it :o ). It's from this company - I buy it as IMHO mutton has much more flavour than lamb ;) If DH hasn't thrown out the label, I'll add the £/kg later :DEdit - it's £5.50/kg, and includes a bone; about £7 for two meals for four of us, so not cheap; hence the HG veggie meals for later in the week!
