BT Broadband - changes to T&Cs: can they do this?

  • "this is just a price increase at wholesale level that is being passed on to customers by BT retail."

So on this basis it's fine for me to unilaterally increase the wages I draw from my employer because the I'm being charged more for Petrol by BP?

I'm of the opinion, that a contract is just that, 'an agreement between two parties of net worth'. The important bit there is 'agreement'. Both parties need to agree. I'm also of the opinion that if one side of the contract get hit by unforeseen costs that's just tough. I've just been hit by the exchange rate changes between GBP and USD with a contract I have with a company in the states. That's just too bad for me I'll have to live with it. I can't just say 'whoa, I can't handle this, I'll just unload this liability onto my customer by changing the contract in mid flight'. If BT want to put this on NEW contracts, that's fine. But trying to force what can be almost 15% increase in the contract cost with existing contracts is not 'fair and reasonable'.
  • If your not planning on stopping your broadband service then you are unaffected.
The charge is a cease charge for not using mac to move to another provider.
this charge was introduced to stop the tag on line issue that affects so many people.
eg if you have a tag on the line and want broadband then it is in the best interest to the service provider to give you a mac as if they dont they will be chrged a cease fee from bt wholesale a charge that bt retail are passing on regardless of reason.

I tried to leave and got the following: Can this be right?

I am sorry but there is nothing in these changes that would allow you to leave without a charge if you are breaking your contract. If you are still having problems, we will try to sort them. If you require a MAC code, of we can provide it by calling our service team, but there will be a termination charge if you are in contract.
