Wireless, Totally stuck! Techie needed

Hi, What I really need is a simple step by step guide to try to connect this Netgear MR814. I have a pc downstairs on NTL broadband via usb. My son has a pc upstairs. I dissconected the modem then re connected with an ethernet cable I also connected the router with another ethernet cable. Got onto Netgear set up followed instructions but I'm no further forward! Tried to plug in USB adapter that came with router into sons new computer but it says drivers are missing. How can I get drivers when his computer is not on the internet? I really havent got a clue what i'm doing. Is it reasonably simple or should I get someone to come and set it up for me. Thanks.

  • what version owindows do you have on your sons pc. If it's xp then it shoulod find the drivers automatically. If not, did the usb wirless adapter come with any driver cd? Check the netgear website for drivers from your pc thats online.
  • Hi, both computers are windows xp (sons is brand new) I didnt get a driver cd with it as i bought it off Ebay. Really I cant get anything to work! When I disconnect NTL via usb and connect it with ethernet I noticed the internet connection was off.

you need to plug the router into the modem downstairs , leave the modem set up as before and plug the cable that used to go into the PC into the router, then use the ethernet cable in the Netgear box to connect the PC to the router

there should be a disk with the USB adapter that you need to load first, and then plug the usb adapter in

  • The wireless adapter came with the router (netgear) however there was no disc. Am I plugging the adapter into my computer or sons upstairs? When I plu it into mine all of the netgear signs/signals appear on my computer but internet connection is lost. When I plugged it into sons it found new hardware but it says that no drivers are loaded and I cant download them as sons computer is not on the internet (yet) !!
