mothers help / nanny where to look

as some of you know we are pregnant again :j, the thing is im trying to weigh up between a nursery for when i return to work or a nanny/mothers help not sure which categorry it comes under, now i know the price of the local nurserys around here so can work out what its going to cost but would like to find out how much it would be to have someone in my home looking after the children.
i have two boys aged 8 and 6 so they are at school and the baby will be roughly 6 months when i go back to work or possibly a yr if i extend my maternity leave.
they would need to be here for the latest half seven in the morning and would have to drop my boys to school but i finish in time to pick them up and would be home for 4pm.
the other thing is i get all the school holidays so ideally would be a term time only contract but know this is probably asking the impossible so am willing to pay for them in the holidays but obviously they wouldnt need to be here as much as i will be home.

can anyone point me in the right direction of where to start looking and roughly how much per week /month , im in the havering area

  • Try looking in The Lady magazine, or phone a nanny agency from the yellow pages, either should be able to tell you the going rate for a nanny. My dd works 7:30 til 6, 5 days a week, lives out & is on £32k. It will depend on whether or not you want someone qualified as a nanny or a mother help may be cheaper if unqualified.

thanks for that, yes definatley want some one qualified, we havent got a yellow pages for some reason. and when i googled quickly earlier i couldnt find any agencys near us. i know its going to cost more than what i earn a year but in the long run means i wont have to start looking all over again for work and getting a placement with the hrs that suit me when little one goes to school.

id never heard of the lady magazine looks really good thannks for that

I'd think someone with their own child/ren would be thrilled to get a job with the school holidays off and an early finish.

Hiya I would also definately recommend The Lady magazine, also have you thought about asking at your local college that runs courses in childcare. They might have a list of qualified ex students they can recommend.

I am a `mothers help`. I got my job recently through looking and advertising on gumtree..I am not classed as qualified which is ironic:rotfl: as i have had 7 children/2 grandchildren of my own and have tons of experience and common sense!

yes i see what your saying, if someone had that level of experience (are you mad , 7. only joking i think its great to have big familys) and i felt comfortable with them etc then great but if they havent got the qualifications and registered i dont know how that works with getting help with childcare vouchers etc (dont even know if my employer does them or not so may not be an issue)

  • Hi
I am a nanny [been doing it for 11 years] and i get my jobs from nannyjob, parents as well as agencys can post jobs on there. Nannies also put their cvs on there so you could find one on there.
Feel free to pm me if you would like anymore info
    Good luck.

hiya thankyou for replying to my thread.

im actually not due till june so would be next xmas i go back to work, i was trying to find out where the best places are to look and find out what exactly it is im looking for ie a mothers help or nanny or au pair, i think its more a nany role as they will be soley responsible for my children when im not there especially the baby as the older boys will be in school,
can you get nannies who work term time only or do you employ them all year or is it up to the individual. iwould need some one from at least half seven am till 4pm, so they can take my boys to school as well, but i can pick them up as i finish work in time.
i need to find out also if my work does childcare vouchers and do nannys take them or just nurserys, think im gonna toddle off and get a notebook to write down everyhting int he order i need so at least i will be asking sensible questions and have some idea of what im talking about lol.
    thankyou again

  • Hi
    To answer your questions:
yes i know lots of nannies who only work term time [ they either get paid a retainer or only want to work part time]
nannies do take childcare credits, very simple once set up [can take a while to organise- ofsted are not exactly organised], for a nanny to be eligable for credits they need to be qualified, have a valid first aid certificate and valid crb. It costs just over £100 for the ofsted registration more if crb is included. Most nannies and agencies expect the parents to pay for this.

    hope this helps
