  • how much hard drive space do you have ( my computer and then lookat your harddrive)?
have you got a cd or dvd writer? if so , copy all your photos onto cd or dvd, if not and you have plenty of floppy disks transfer them to them.

by start from scratch, i think people mean reformat your hard drive and get your windows xp disk and reinstall everything. this will get rid of any problems you have and then reinstall your anti virus and firewall once you have updated to sp2 with all current updates.

if you dont have windows xp then you will have to buy it ( about £50). if you dont do much with the pc apart from surf the internet and play the odd game i would bother spending any more money on a new pc. it just sounds like this one needs reformatting and the software being kept up to date.

  • I would recommend an XP Repair Install before a format and full re-install. Usually does the trick. Use NLite for slipstreaming SP 2 plus subsequent hotfixes and chipset/graphics drivers onto one XP install CD.

There were problems with earlier versions of Ewido and XP pre-SP2. It's a C++ error in Ewido in its autoupdate routine. Try manually downloading and updating to the latest version (3.5), then disable automatic updates and update manually thereafter.

  • Sorry for the delay in replying, I couldn't connect so had to reinstall XP, then I was side tracked by Xmas and kids.

you need to use special tools to deleted norton, it was a pain in the bum for me, some of the more helpful peeps on here have posted the link for the removal tool.

Few intial thoughts on your last post.

I recommend you print this out to help you follow it all.

First, you have less than 10% of your hard drive free. That will cause problems. You should aim to leave around 20% free. Is there anything you can remove? How about getting another hard drive or putting some of the larger items (such a those pictures you mention) on to other media such as CD?

Next, your XP is well out of date. This is the cause of many troubles. Update it to Service Pack 2 here.....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Without SP2 we are all wasting our time. When you are fixed you will go online again and get re-infected.

The Norton removal tool is here...

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039?Open&src=&docid=2001092114452606&nsf=nav.nsf&view=pfdocs&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl=

BE CAREFUL....it will remove everything "Norton" on your PC. If you have a Norton product you want to keep - such as Ghost - you will have to re-install it after using this tool.

    Download Ad-aware SE here…

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it.

    ……. & VX2 Cleaner…….

    Go here…

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

....to get the plug-in for fixing VX2 variants. To run this tool choose Software > Add-ons (left navigation bar) then select VX2 Cleaner.
Follow the instructions to run it. If your system is clean it will say “Status System Clean”. Otherwise, you will have to click on the Clean button to remove the VX2 infection.

Also make sure to customize the settings in Ad-aware for better scan results by reading the article here…

    http://www.greyknight17.com/spyware.htm#adware

Run the scan and fix everything that it finds.

    Download Stinger here...

    http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

....and scan your system with it. Have it remove anything it finds bad.

You have "Shopnav" adware. This is the uninstaller (alledgedly). This program comes from the maker of shopnav and I always doubt whether the removal offered by the malware writer will actually work but we can only hope.

    http://www.shopnav.com/uninstall2.html

Use it to remove what it can.

[Ad-aware and Stinger may also do something about shopnav but I somehow doubt it.]

Please go to your Add/Remove Programs folder and see if there are any programs there you don't recognise. Particularly anything with "srng", "shopnav" or anything that looks like it could be related to shopnav.

Please post details/names of any mystery programs before you remove them.

When done please post a new HJT log for further checking and - MOST IMPORTANT - tell us how your computer is behaving now.
  • Pchelpman, Thank-you for your help. I am going to work through the list now as i am slow to work these things out it may take a while to report back.

I just tried to get the SP2 but my PC wont respond to the link, I just get the egg timer for a long time and just had to end task, I also tried to get it from the help and support link on the start menu but the same thing, it won't bring the microsoft updates page up.

I will try some of the other things on the list to see if I can do them.

    Thanks

    Michelle

    still can't get microsoft updates

I can't put photos on CD as I don't have one, but I do have another Hard drive but this PC is not detecting it. It is very old about 7yo.and since we had XP put on it, it has never worked properly,(can't use scanner or printer) So having said all that I don't want you to waste any more time on me. I am going to wait for a good offer on a new PC. and in the meantime just hope for the best with this one.

Thank-you for all the help, it is running better than before.

What happens when you try and get MS Updates ?

I ask because some viruses/worms change your settings to disable MS updates.

If you still suspect a virus/worm, in addition to PCHelpmans excellent advice above, you can follow the steps in this link below to double check everything. It worked for me when I cleaned a friends PC which incidentally also had'nt been updated to SP2.
