Help needed with internal Asian flights... (Please!)

Hi,

I am going traveling in SE Asia, and am on a very tight budget. My best friend is getting married in the Maldives in February, and I have already booked the accommodation to go to the wedding.

I am trying to book flights now - but they are all coming up as extortionately expensive...

Can anyone give me any tips on getting cheap internal Asian flights? Ideally I would fly to Male from either Malaysia or Vietnam, then return to Bangkok. But if it makes loads of difference to the price, going to and from Bangkok would do :)

Any help would be very much appreciated :)

Google the Airports' websites for the names of the airlines that travel on the routes you want to travel.

sorry to answer a question with a question - can you confirm that they are actually marrying in the Maldives as I was looking at that and was told it was not possible - would need to get married somewhere else (like Sri Lanka) then honeymoon there....thanks

They are actually having a proper wedding ceremony in the Maldives - but this doesn't count as legal marriage, so they will be having a civil ceremony in the UK when they get back :)

    Chivas,

Form experience (or unless someone tells me different!) you won't get low cost carriers flying to the Maldives. Singapore, Malaysian & Bangkok Airways all fly (some sporadically) to the Maldives from Asia, however, these routes are not cheap. (£400+ return)

If you have not already booked your international flights, your best bet could / should be booking London - Maldives through fare on SQ or MH, and then booking your SE Asian internal flights from there on the cheapo airlines.

It's a 4 1/2 - 5 hour flight, so remember the Maldives are hardly local to Thailand!

Malaysian Airlines are around £600 plus tax to the Maldives. Not cheap, but could be your cheapest bet once you have added everything else into the equation. Singapore Airlines £800 plus tax.

If you can do Maldives at beginning or end of your trip, you might get better deal using Sri Lankan Airlines, speak to a human being (like at Trailfinders etc) for that kind of routing, as your computer will probably say no.

Extortionately expensive...? Should we guess at what you consider as extortionate?

Maybe you can begin at that juncture, to save us wasting time on looking for prices at which you have already been quoted.

    Yes, sorry...

I've found £477 from sri lankan airways return from bangkok. (Which seems expensive to me - mostly as my 5 stop/ 3 continent flight deal cost < £1k! )

Trying to break up the journey to return to a different destination pushed the price up to the £700+ mark...

I didn't really want to spend more than £400 - though can just about stretch to the 477 if I have to :(

I've found Ho Chi Minh > BKK > Male > BKK for £420. Don't think you'll find much cheaper.

In fact, the BKK > Male > BKK portion costs £325, but you have to buy a minimum of 3 coupons with the Discovery Airpass. Maybe you can tie it in with your current itinerary.

    That's a great price - thank you!

Although, maybe I'm being daft - but how do you buy these coupons?! I can't find a button!!!
