Honda servicing trying to rip me off - brake discs question

Comments

  • vw brakes dont contain anything nasty, infact they are organic and grow back over night as long as you take them to be watered at a vw main dealer every couple of weeks

  • I thought it was the pads that used to have the asbestos in, not the discs...??

thats what i said, the pads used to have asbestos in them.

    glasses anyone?:p

i saw a disc on my last van that makes me change discs every time now,the disc had actually broken off from the hub part of the disc where it mounts onto the wheel studs. these were genuine merc discs with 5000 miles on them. luckily it was on one that done it.

Thanks for all your replies. Lots of what you've said makes sense.

I have only had the car since Jan and have done 7k miles since. But I am on mat leave at the mo so it sits on the drive for days at a time. I am a very careful driver and don't brake hard (always slow down without brakes if I can see lights/traffic slowing etc in the distance).

The man who owned it before me also used to leave it standing for long periods... he pretty much only used it to drive to Devon and back with his caravan. So not surprising the discs have rusted... so if I have them replaced how do I stop the same thing happening again?

Re with only 2-3k on the pads they will be shot by next servicing... well I will just take them to the garage to be replaced when I have done another 2k miles!

So lack of use and lack of braking seem to be the problem here. Honda are taking another look at it today so will see what they say.

That might have been in reply to my post - I always get pads and discs mixed up when I'm typing. I triple checked the message before sending and I still got it wrong

madness it will take another 5 mins to get the pads done now, rather than having to take it back in again

The only surefire way is to park the car in a well ventilated garage.

Well they come to my house to pick the car up and drop it back so it is no problem for me. Will have them done at a local garage anyway, not at Honda.

The Honda guy has admitted they didn't need doing straight away, he said bring it back in in january - and he gave me AA cover for a year as well.

Don't worry - Goldiespangles is probably at Specsavers as I type... they have some nice pink frames on special at the moment. ;)

  • My Honda Accord Tourer had to have its rear brake discs and pads replaced in May - it is 4 years old and has done 45000 miles, but it too spends a lot of the time not being used. It has needed 2 sets of front tyres which I read is a common problem with the Accord.
I paid my independent mechanic £200 for supply and fit, and also a new battery.
