Gas boiler service - how much should it cost?

Hi,

we've jsut mvoed into a house with an ancient gas boiler (not a combi one) and want to get it serviced as it won't ahve been used since 2 winters ago as the previous occupant died around October 2007.

Does anyone know how much is a fair price? We are in Surrey/SW London.

THanks

Why not have a ring round and see? What make and model of boiler is it? The engineer might quote to service but then find other issues especially if it hasnt been run for two years.
  • It's a Potterton boiler. Ive had 1 quote of £65 plus VAT. Does that sound reasonable?

I believe BG had an offer to service for £50 and another major company even cheaper.

If you do a search you will find if thise offers are still available.

You can probably find a serviving schedule on-line and see what is involved. Most servicing is simply a visual inspection and cleaning of burners etc, with nothing to adjust.

It sounds fair to me. The quality and standard of service you receive is dependant on the training and integrity of the attending engineer. CORGI registration is not a guarantee of knowledge, skill, safety or quality of service !

hi just a suggestion, british gas have the three star service which if you join you get an initial inspection ect to ensure it is working correctly, if it needs attention you wont be accepted for the service and wont pay for the inspection either, that way if its an old boiler ect you can cover it for breakdown for as little as 9 per month and also it gets it checked for nothing. i have this service and have for some years they are very good at coming out to repair and i had a water tank leak last year and had the whole tank, cistern ect put in new should be around 1800 but it was covered with my service soi cost nothing thankfully.
    self confessed 80's throwback:D

Just to add that an inspection is not the same as a service.
