Can't get a straight answer out of '3', can anyone help pls?

My contract is due to expire on either 18th (according to my bill) or 16th according to them???, I requested a pac code too early (on their advice) and it expired after 30 days which was before my contract ended. I have got a new contract phone now from another network but can't decide which is best/cheapest to do. I have to ring them today and let them know either...
1. to request another pac code so that I can transfer my number to my new network.
2. to change it to PAYG so that I have the number still incase I miss any important calls.
I think I'd rather do no 1. but I don't know if I will get charged more (maybe another months line rental??) as it takes 5 days to transfer a pac code and that would go over my original contract ending date. I did ask customer services but he kept repeating himself like he was just reading something to me and it made no sense. After 16 minutes I gave up feeling really annoyed. Also, if I change to PAYG then I have to top up with £15 which has to be used within one month - is this right?
Sorry for all the questions, I'd really appreciate some help.

Sorry, forgot to mention that the old contract is with '3'.0

I think which ever method you choose you still have to give 30 days notice to 'end' the contract so will be liable for 1 months rental whether by PAC or PAYG(the PAYG option may be slightly more flecxible)0

If you give 30 days notice your contract ends on day 30 (you get charged line rental till your contract is a year or 18 months old). If you forgot to give the 30 days notice then if you request a PAC code it takes about 7 days for the number to transfer to the new network. When the numbers transferred its the end of your contract. I had loads of problems with 3 issuing me 2 "fake" PAC codes. It was a nightmare getting any sort of help from CS. So I took the only other option and contacted OFCOM. That got my PAC code sorted pronto!0

Oh I'm so annoyed with '3'. I did ask them on the phone if I could send the letter of cancellation a couple of weeks early and I stated that I wanted the notice to start at a time that would mean the 30 days would be up at the end of the contract, but they didn't do this. Now they've stitched me up! Also, should I use all my free minutes up before the supposed cut off date of my contract or is the cut off date for free minutes earlier than that? I don't want to give them anymore money than I have to.0

Sorry to hear that Mrsmondragon, glad you got it sorted in the end.0

Will they charge me for the 7 days extra or for a whole month if I get THE PAC code?0
-
If your contract has finished you will be on a rolling month by month contract. If you use your PAC code you should only pay up to 7 days, the day the number transfer takes place.0
-
They will charge seven days rental not thirty days rental.0

Thanks! I'll do that then.0

Now why couldn't he just tell me that on the phone?0
