Gas Meter seems to be going too slow?

I had the heating on all week, on constant coz its been so cold and the kids have been ill.
I read the meter on Monday morning, and its been on since then. I only have rad valves no thermostat. They have nearly all been on full. In that time I have only used 2 units on a metric meter. Thats about 22kwh's I think. Surely thats wrong. Last winter I was using miles more than that. Do you think my meter could be faulty?

It could be a faulty. That doesn't seem like much gas based on the way you say you are using it.
When gas meters fail, they usually read low as they rely on a turbine that revolves due to the gas passing over it. Sometimes the turbine can become stiff to turn, or more usually a blade breaks off meaning the turbine doesn't revolve properly.
Call your supplier and report the matter. They will probably agree to arrange a replacement meter free of charge. If not, at least you could claim you had alerted them to the possible fault if they later decide it is faulty and come after you for more money."Now to trolling as a concept. .... thanks, Its to good to be true. part of me thinks i won the lottery and other part saysi should ring them.
wonder how many people would ring them though. I could always play daft.0 -
In fact domestic gas meters only come in two flavours
Diaphragm (mechanical)
Ultrasonic (electronic)
Diaphragm meters are the original mechanical type which use the regulated filling and emptying of a set of interconnected compartments to provide rotary motion which in turn rotates the index.
Ultrasonic meters have no moving parts and utilise an ultrasonic transducer fitted ina tube of konwn length/diameter and volume to infer the passed volume which is then translated into an electronic index.
Turbine meters are only used in very high flow situations such as factories or large commercial situations where there is a constant flow at high volume.
Does your meter sound noisy? could you perhaps have misread it?
It might be interesting to see what your next bill is?
Domestic credit meters are generally quite reliable and so i'd tend to leave it and see what happens .0 -
It does not sound noisy and was only changed in 2006, so its not even that old. I have definately not mis-read it. The heating has now been on constant since Monday morning and we also cook by Gas. Its now moved 3 units.
In the past that would have been around 7-8 a day.0 -
You say 'in the past' you used more, was that before or after the meter was exchanged? If it was before it could be your meter has changed from a imperial one (cubic feet) and to a metric one (cubic metres) which means you will use less units because the units are larger.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

No same meter, winter 2006 and winter 20070 -
I would start doing a daily read and see how it goes.
This is a lovely thread to read...it's usually my meter is faulty, I can't possibly have used this much gas/electricOfficial DFW Nerd Club - Member no: 203.0 -
Its definately using the wrong amount. Its not even used one metric unit 2day and its been on full all day and Ive just cooked our tea in a gas oven.0

And you are certain it is a metric meter?0
