I would be very careful about transferring to PAYT then onto the contract - although technically possible sure someone will know!) this is likely to breach the cashback T&Cs as the telephone number will be different.

OK but that is not what I am suggesting I do. I am suggesting that I take out a new Vodaphone contract in addition to my Tesco PAYG mobile. I will therefore have 2 phones, one with free calls to make outgoing calls and the other to take incoming calls from the people who already know my number. When my new 12 month Vodaphone contract is complete I will cancel it and then look around for another 12 month deal that I can transfer my Tesco number to.

Not sure what a "transfer" is. Whatever is or may be possible, I won't touch it unless my cashback is covered and proveable. Whatever people say now could change in 3 months' time, which is when the number I would prefer to keep is up (literally not metaphorically, hopefully!).

Porting is when you move from one network to another, you can't port to the same network as that isn't porting, that is transferring from one 'account' to another.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

i will try and rephrase what i ment...

Vodafone do not offer temp numbers so therefor the pac is needed at the point of sale. The process is not automated, the sales staff will have to call up vodafone and register the connection manualy. Once the connection has been made a number cannot be ported in. The only for that would be to cancel the contract and then buy one again.

If you have the PAC code then its no problem porting over but if u dont then u should not buy the contract until u do. This is where the problem comes in and where phones4u staff will tell lies to get a sale. Phones4u have daily targets and they want the sale that day and not one week later, main reason for this is because they believe you will take the info they have given you and go buy elsewhere. So they will do all they can to make you buy on the same day even if that means you get a new number.

Bextech your right about porting however you can port a pay as you go to contract on the same network. Voda pay as you go to Voda contract however you cannot port a contract onto a contract.

Sorry - my misunderstanding - I tried running two mobiles for a while but it got annoying carrying two mobiles round. For some mobiles, it is possible to get dual/ghost sims (for some, means cutting your sim cards to fit into a new holder -fairly straightforward but not for the faint-hearted!).
