Internet details - how do you remember yours?

Like many people on this forum, my wife and I have spread our savings around various Internet based savings accounts for safety.

This creates the problem of the many 'security' questions that need to be answered. Some are obvious like Mothers Maiden name while others want to know your favorite group, etc.

Others have completely un-memorable login id's as well as the super-strength passwords, which brings me to the point.....

How do you remember all of these?

Do you:-

a. Write them down and store the scrap of paper somewhere safe
b. Spreadsheet on your PC (with the risk of having it stolen)
c. Encrypted file on your PC - or online vault
d. Use Egg Money Manager

It's a quandry, but so far a mixture of a, c and d has worked for us.

We've recently made sure that a. is somewhere tea-leaves would never look and b. are not on our PC any more, but it got us thinking about how do other MSE'ers cope?

  • I use Keepass. You only need to remember one password and just put all your details on there. Very easy to use and open source (free)! I back it up on a USB stick for extra security.

Another vote for keepass here. There is also a Portable Apps version of KeePass, which you can store securely on a USB key and leaves no temp files or anything on the host computer (as per all Portable Apps software) when it's run.

This topic is well covered on the Tech Forum, perform a search.

Another vote for Keepass. Not only can you store your details in it, you can use a hotkey to tell it to recognise the website and enter your username and password for you. Saves a load of time.

I use roboform Pro password & form filler. Top encryption used and only one master password to remember. Great as you can also have safenotes, different users etc.
  • Roboform is great. But for banking I wouldn't trust anything on a computer. Memory and coded mesages that Only I would know is how I do my on-line banking, no passwords writen down.

Excuse my ignorance, but does this mean that if your pc is stolen it would automatically log the thief on your web sites, or does it still ask for the Keepass password before it does it ?

I have used many but Keepass is best and its free.
All I ask is the chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

You have to enter your keepass password before you can proceed any further and log on to your chosen website.

If you're worried about your PC being pinched then store your keepass database on a USB stick.
