The Flex Account is Nationwide's current account, I've had one for years with a Debit Card - see HERE for info on upgrading to a Debit Card with your present Flex Account.
  • Just been to them but they wont upgrade due to my credit rating which i know for a fact is excellent though i did miss some DD's last year on my nationwide account due to an illness in the family and the way that DD's don't always go out on the same day every month.on every other account or loan i have never once defaulted suggestions please

  • From what I've read on these boards I 'm under the impression that NW are more likely to give you a CC rather than their 3-in-1 debit card.
You can use the cashcard for withdrawals at the same great rate and the credit card for all other purchases (perhaps there could be limited outlets that wouldn't take the credit card and insist on debit, but this would be a minor hassle) and pay it off with the same money you would've used to pre-load the debit card.
p.s. maybe those missed DDs have took the shine of your excellent rating?

I agree with Sofa Surfer, it seems quite difficult to upgrade from a cashcard with Nationwide to a Debit card.I think they also look for salary, wages, tax credits etc to be paid in regularly.

If its only for the occasional holiday, then you could just use cash machines.

Abbey, Post Office, Thomas Cook and a few other credit cards dont have a loading.

I have never had my salary, etc., paid into my Flex account - just ad hoc deposits.

That's the whole point of having a Flex Debit Card, as cash withdrawals from ATMs are at the Visa interbank rate with no additional charges, unlike any other Debit Cards which typically charge transaction fees plus a loading for exchange rate.

I opened an NW account - got a debit/cash/cheque card (with cheque book) a couple years ago - excluding holiday money, the most it normally has going into it is £100 a week. (well until IceSave went bust that is..)

IIRC, all I needed to do at the time was deposit £100 - no other conditions.

(edit: this was opened as, and still is, my 2nd current account.)
    Conjugating the verb 'to be":
-o I am humble -o You are attention seeking -o She is Nadine Dorries

If i can use the cashcard abroad then my problems are solved.I've got 3 credit cards with nothing on them to use for buying anything else thanks for your help everybody

I think we are talking upgrades, banks/building societies are much more likely to upgrade accounts once opened when used regularly, than just for ad-hoc amounts.Nationwide seem much stricter than other banks/ building societies on upgrade criteria.

The cash card also gives free atm access.

  • My Nationwide account is used for all my home related direct debits gas, elec, phone, tv, council tax, water. So it regularly has app £300 per month going in noy fussed that they refused to upgrade me though surprised as Lloyds/TSB told me my credit rating was excellent
