Beware Volvo Cars
This is just a warning to people thinking of buying a Volvo XC90, I have a 2004 model with only 89,000 miles on it and it has a major transmission problem requiring a £1350 outlay. Volvo UK say this is perfectly acceptable even though the service history is pure Volvo and complete. They refuse to contribute towards the repair costs. The last but one service cost the previous owner £1500!!!! It has never been off road or towed yet has still developed a very dangerous fault. Volvo say it could seize up and cause the car to roll over. Be very carefull buying any second hand 4 wheel drive Volvo as they have some serious reliability issues, read the web sites and search for forums which back up these problems.

Big text :O
Try find a transmission specialist and ask for a quote, should be cheaper than Volvo. With all respect, if their warranty has run out, they have no liability. Although I think if you sent a letter complaining to Volvo HQ stating how the car has always been serviced to specified intervals by a Volvo dealer, and you're very dissatisfied - will never use volvo dealers or buy the brand again etc they may offer some sort of "good will" gesture on the repairs.0 -
i know these volvos are very susceptible to transmission damage if the tyres have different tread depths on them, so if you get a puncture on one you have to replace all 4 tyres, what are the tyres like on yoursHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. this isnt just limited to volvo 4 wheel drives, this is also a thing worth noting if your buying an audi tt quattro.
im sure this wont just be limited to these vehicles, probably most modern 4x4's with fancy transmissions....work permit granted!0 -
Its your own fault for using the dealer for servicing, you idiot.0

You bought an XC90 and never used it off-road? That's your problem.
Buy a more suitable car next time...Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
I wish all 4x4 cars not designed for off road use would roll over.
I bet buying a silly 4x4 made the OP feel superior to the neighbours in his cul-de-sac or Tesco's car park.
I curse every one of them being badly driven of being on the school run. I'm soooo glad the road tax is rocketing for them.0 -

how do you know where he lives, just because he has not been off road does not mean he does not need a 4x4 ,last time i checked it was still a free country and we are allowed to drive what we wish, the op is entitled to his/her choice of car just like you .Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Last time I checked, buying a 4x4 was not illegal. As for environmental concerns, my Nissan Navarra averages around 34mpg. Not bad for a vehicle that can carry 5 adults in comfort and about a tonne of cargo.
There are many reasons why people buy 4x4s. For me it was a practical choice. Feeling superior to people like Chri5 is just a bonus!0 -
Lets get this in perspective. There is nothing wrong with this chap wanting to run round in his nice Volvo motor. It isnt illegal and in a free society,he can do that if he can afford it.
Now then, his motor is apprently well out of warranty so Volvo do not have any apparent liability.
It would be really usefull to have an accurate description of the exact issue for us to chew on.
My view would be that if i have an accurate assessment of the issue and i feel genuinely that this is a design issue, then i would be minded to write a nice,concise,un-emotional letter ot Volvo uk explaining my views on the matter..no threats,no rants..just concise facts.
You might get lucky.
If it isnt an apparent design issue then its just too bad and i guess you will have to pay up.
All this business of having to have the same tread depth on 4x4 wheels sounds iffy to me.
Either way,its wrong to blight all volvos just because of an individual experience.0
