USB Hardware installation errors

There are a lot of reports out there with this problem, suggesting an issue with registry entries. Here's an example:

Looks as though Sysinternals utility Regmon might give enough info to track down the entry involved.0 -
Thanks fwor. I have downloaded regmon, installed and ran it on the machine, capturing the bit where I tried to connect a usb mouse.
The report has 48557 lines and I only captured the data for a minute or two!! Any clues on what bits in there I should filter on for analysis?
ThanksIt's easier to get forgiveness than to ask permission

I'm guessing here, as it's not a problem I've ever had, but I'd go into Device Manager and see what name is used for the USB host controller, and use that as a filter.
It's hard to diagnose this sort of problem when you can't see the PC involved, and even if you can, it's still hard...0 -
Start the PC in safe mode. Go to device manager and uninstall everything under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, this may include USB printing support etc. Now restart the PC ensuring nothing USB is plugged in. Windows will now detect and install the USB ports, this has the effect of reseting the USB driver stack. Once Windows has finished plug in your USB mouse and keyboard.0

Thanks for that Simon, but my Device Manager is "not responding" when I try to delete USB controllers.
Any other advice for a pc numpty (ie. idiots guide to solving this!)
None of the other advice regarding the registry makes any sense to me...:o
ThanksIf I had a pound for every...... oh sod it, if I just had a pound I'd be richer!0
