USB Hardware installation errors

A friend asked me to have a look at his computer as it had a suspected virus. Thanks to Reluctant Spender and Browntoa, I think it is now clean and protected (spybot / ad aware / avg / sygate / spyware blaster)

The problem I have now is that I cannot get either a USB mouse or a usb pen to work on the computer.

When it was at my friends house, he had a usb mouse plugged in and working fine but when I brought it to my house to work on it, I just collected the box (<technical term :o ) intending to use my monitor / mouse and keyboard but I have had to revert to using a serial(?) mouse.

When I connect either a usb mouse or pen, i get the 'Welcome to found new hardware wizard' and choose the option to install automatically. The screen then looks as if it is copying files before showing a message saying 'cannot install this hardware. An error occured during the installation of the device' and 'The data is invalid'.

So far, I have tried running the system file checker (sfc /scannow) but (obviously) that did not work.

Any suggestions on what I can look at / try next. Thanks

OK - how would I go about doing that? :o

The computer does not have internet access as I have it here at the moment and have no way of connecting it.

Do you know make/model of motherboard?
If not download Belarc Advisor stick it on a CD (flash drive would be easier but.....), transfer and install on friends PC.
Run program, this will give details of motherboard, off to manufacturers site, find all relevant drivers, download onto CD.
Transfer to friends PC, then open and run them as you would any other program.
If you have trouble put the mobo details here and someone will point you in the right direction.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Thank you! Have downloaded that software and transfered it (via cd  ). Have the resulting file . Is it the main circuit board section I need to look at? In which case - this is what it tells me:

    Board: Dell Computer Corp. 0N6381
    Serial Number: ..CN7082147600FH.
    Bus Clock: 533 megahertz
BIOS: Dell Computer Corporation A00 06/30/2004

    I can't find the driver though :(

  • No, it is this one

    Dell Computer Corporation Dimension 3000
System Service Tag: B8RW81J (support for this PC)
    Chassis Serial Number: B8RW81J
    Enclosure Type: Mini-Tower

But I can't find the motherboard driver using this service tag  It may well be hiding from me under a different driver name just to confound me!

It's almost certainly included with the one called "Chipset".

Thank you  . I will go and download and run that to see if it sorts things.

Anything I need to do / consider before I go ahead??

  • I have downloaded and installed the driver (and it was the right one as it mentioned USB ports in the installation description) but...

It hasn't worked, I still have exactly the same error as in the OP!

    Please, anyone any other suggestions?
