Orange mobile phone contract

My son has lost his job and is currently 7 months into a 24 month mobile phone contract, he has no income and lives at home with us. I contacted Orange to see what they could do but they told me they will only drop his tarriff from £30 a month to £25 a month after 12 months or he could pay £400+ to get out of the contract, is there anything we can do.

• To be honest, I don't think there is anything you can do as he is under contract with them. There are plenty of temp jobs around. Could he not afford it until he gets another job?

I would guess that in the current climate, any company would not enjoy bad press, this site is well read and may mean that they change their minds when they realise that they are getting bad press.

I have found with Orange, if you chat to the correct person, they will bend over backwards to help (others will not!!!) - the problem is getting the right person - keep trying I bet they get board before you?
• Unfortunately it's not a case of speaking to the correct person - there are procedures which will not allow the termination of the account with a £400+ buy-out clause.

'bad-press' related to an inability of a customer to fulfil their contractual obligation is unlikley to scare the network.

If your son's contract is up-to date payment-wise (i.e no payments are in arrear) he can request a temporary disconnection for a period of upto 6months. There are terms and conditions associated to this, but it will suspend payments due for a period of 6months - it should allow sufficient time to find a new job and continue to fulfil the contractual obligation.

• Hi Crystal15,
Sorry to hear about your son, I work for Orange and am here in official capacity.
If you drop me an email to customer.services@orange.co.uk with his contact details I will give him a call to see if we can get the monthly amount down to a more manageable price.
Put 'Jonathan Orange Response' in the subject of the email and it will get to me.
Thanks,
Jonathan

Good to see Orange care about some of the issues we post here. It would be nice if some of the other firms had similar case study teams...

Good work Jonathan :) im not an Orange customer, but may be swayed if o2 aren't as helpful as Orange appear to be!

So if they're blacked out they're no longer registered users? O2UK would have been handy to ask some questions...! ;)
