Which DVD/HDD recorder to buy, & where from please

Hi MSE peeps, I've been toying with getting a DVD HDD set up for some time now, can any one advise me on a reliable piece of kit please, I prefer reliability over loads of hardly used functions.

Regards Kev.

You can get a stand alone DVD recorder/player at Aldi for less than 90 pounds. Be quick if you want one.

Don't you think it might have been an idea to give an indication of your budget nes pas?

Having said that you really can't go wrong with buying from Richer Sounds. This link is for a Panasonic model currently on offer:

I've had three Panasonics through my hands over the last year or two. Excellent bits of kit and the one 4nick8 is on about is a nice one. The 80gb drive is ample for day to day use. I would buy it from AJElectronics though. I've bought a few things from there and service is instant. They have the Panasonic as above at an even cheaper price and its multi region as well. Nowt against Richersounds - bought a fair bit of stuff from them as well.
  • I've just bought he Panasonic DMR-EH50 (multi region) from Richer Sounds and it is great.

They will do a price match and then take a further £10 off (so I ended up getting it for approx £225).
  • Hi, thanks for the info, I didn't include a budget, so as not to restrict the available options, if the price is right then the price is right, by the way, I thought this was an ENGLISH site, so why the smart 4R53 comments?

I've just bought the Sony 710. Pricey but excellent test reports. 160gb and built in Freeview which means you have superbly easy programming as you just click on the 7 day detailed programme.

I'd agree. Go for the panasonics at the cheaper end or if you've got the money then the Sony 710 or 910. Only go for the 910 if you're planning on buying a high def telly some time in the next year as it's got a hdmi output (for high def pics) and also upscale standard dvd's to high def too.
  • The Pioneer 433 is probably the best "budget" DVD/HDD recorder out there.
  • try LG7500 80 gig hard drive plays everything u through at it and divx about £250.00

I have bought myself a Liteon 5026 DVD / HDD (80Gig) from Argos for £179.99. It was on offer but Comet do this (called a 5024G) for the same price. Its also avaliable with a 160gb HD for about £240ish.

IMHO the pros are that it has Video+, records to both +/- discs and is fairly simple to use. The cons are it does not play divx and the internal tuner is not great. I have linked this to a Phantomplus PVR gismo from Maplin (£19.99) connected it to my Sky digibox and have now ditched Sky+ as this does the same thing. Works like a charm.

There is a good forum that deals with the Liteon machines. I am happy with the machine and consider it good value for £180.
Sorry not sure how to put in links etc, so here is a cut and paste of the Liteon forum.

I hope this is of help...

    Cheers
