Well it was all relative. Remember that generally people would only buy with a multiple of the one wage and they had to have a big deposit, they wouldn't furnish the place for years on end and it was a big thing to do.
Only rich people would have more than one house.
Interesting to see some comments on how good it would be to be mortgage free and have bought several other properties. This is just the mentality that caused house prices to rise so ridiculously in the first place.
If we really want it to be like yesteryear then we must have some sensibility in borrowing. At what point, exactly, did it become the norm to get a loan to buy a car? At what point did it become okay to buy on credit (okay so catalogues have been around donkey's years)? When did it become everyday to possess a credit card? We are, by and large, a greedy nation. We want, want, want. You can go back to how it was if that is what you wish - but you need to do it properly.0 -

Everyone who has a mortgage which is not fixed 'hopes' that mortgage rates dont go up
Everyone who is in a job 'hopes' they don't lose it
Everyone who is healthy 'hopes' they remain healthy.
Don't live your life by what if, live your life making decisions about facts that you know at the time, be flexible and prepared to adjust when the information changes
I don't see how it is contradictory or infers I am unwell:wall:

Poor sod (not sure if that word is allowed or not!) he is the one who gets everything! He is the complex autistic with a myriad of food allergies and food intolerances, bowel disorder, hypermobile joints and now severe asthma!
Poor little sod, he does seem to have had some really bad luck there. Hope it improves with age as ISTL said his did....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I imply, you infer.......much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
My uncle bought the house he's living in now for the grand some of 2000 pound.....but we are going way back
he had it valued last year.......worth 250k a massive 3 bed bungalow in mansfield
those were t'days.......the monty python sketch of the 4 northeners comes to mind :-)
Oh for crying out loud!!!!
£2000 donkeys years ago was a HUGE sum!! Your uncle was probably on about £20 a week wages!!!!!!!

Ravenshead a few mile outside of mansfield.....a very nice place TBH but full of old farts....would you live in the same place for over 50 years if it wasn't nice?? and i can assure you he is the rich uncle in my family.....(or should i say the only rich person in my family
) so could have easily have moved.
Its just one of those few places left in the country where all the neighbours know each other (most of his neighbours have also lived there pretty much the whole of their lives to)
The funny thing is as far back as i can remember he has never changed the decor in the kitchen or the carpet in the lounge....awesome colours
If your uncle is rich why is he living in a £250k house with old dated decor? :rolleyes:0 -

You state that everyone in work hopes they don't lose their job.
You state that everyone who is healthy hopes to remain healthy.
You also state that you don't hope for anything.
Semantic analysis of your statements points to you being out of work and unhealthy.
thegibdog's post was pedantry of the highest order, and I'm sure we all kinda 'got' what you meant... But pedantry can be amusing0 -

Ok I get it now.
I guess pedantry can be amusing, but really, is it the lowest form of wit?
Maybe not, Russell and Jonathon currentlyhold that title:wall:

Maybe he's not status-conscious?...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
