If the batteries are a few years old then they will not hold as much charge as when new and it is probably time to replace them. It is worth getting some new batteries, as the new ones will be higher capacity.
A good quality fast charger will be more convenient to use and keep the batteries in best condition.
Rechargeable batteries will go flat in a few months even if not used, so if they are not used regularly then give them a charge before use.

The reason why many toys state 'do not use rechargeable batteries' is not that they don't work, it is that rechargeable batteries can supply a higher current than non-rechargeable batteries so in the event of a fault or short-circuit the toy can overheat.
