New Firewall/Anti Virus. Is this correct??

I do not have a router, just use a mobile dongle for my internet access. I decided to uninstall the free McAfee on my new laptop and replace it with:

COMODO - I have turned the Vista firewall off. Is there anything else I have to do? Do I need to run anything periodically? Will it get updates automatically?
**

AVAST - It carried out a scan when I installed it. How do I get it to run scans say once a week? I've seen a post where someone has set it to 'ACTIVE SCAN & UPDATE EVERY 7 DAYS', but I cant find it now.

**
MALWAREBYTES - How often should I run this? Will it update automatically?

**
SPYBOT - I will be downloading this tonight. I understand that I should set it up to UPDATE IMMUNISE & SCAN. Is this done during set up?

When I checked security settings in Vista, it says everything is OK and has put AVAST under the Spyware category as well as virus protection:confused:

It also says Windows Defender is on. Is this correct or will it conflict with everything else? Should I turn it off?

Sorry for so many questions, I don't really understand techie things :-(

It checks for updates automatically. See settings in Miscellaneous -> Settings -> Update

Don't have Avast but you might want to have a look at the user guide.

It wont update if you haven't purchased it. Go to the Update tab and check your settings there. You can manually update from there too.

    That's fine.

    No harm having it on.

    Thankyou so much!

One last question, I went into Control Panel and looked at security. It seems that Windows Defender is placed under Malware Protection. That being the case, do I not have 2 antivirus' working at the same time? Everyone says you shouldn't have 2:confused:

  • kdst - the majority of the answer above should see you right.

Avast is a anti virus product and Windows Defender is a spyware product which acts is a proactive manner.

Malwarebytes is a reactive scanner and is dormant unless you set it to scan.

When you installed Comodo did you activate defense plus?

I did have a tutorial for Avast I will have a look for you. found it - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial104.html

As far as scanning goes I run them all once a week.

If I have missed something then just give us a shout.

It's fine to have various malware/spyware programs as they each have there own benefits. However it isn't good to have more than one anti-virus software :)

    Thankyou for your help.

Reluctant...that tutorial is excellent, I will read it properly later.
I think Comodo is set to Defense + as when I look in settings, it shows that 'Defense + has blocked 0 suspious attempts' etc. However, it shows that I have 195 files waiting for review???? I am just a non techie female, I don't know how to review 195 files:shocked:

I also have another problem tonight :-(

I can't install spybot. It keeps tripping at installation with an error 'Reading URL operation timed out' I've tried 5 times with the same result. Maybe the problem is my connection not being very fast?? Is there another Spyware program I can download?

I never had these things with McAfee and am starting to wonder if I should've just stuck with it :-(

  • I have the paid version of Superantispyware - they do a free version which is reactive.

Do you use Internet Explorer and or firefox?

I will be honest and wondered why you uninstalled a free version of McAfee. It would have saved you a lot of work.
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.

I use explorer but I know everyone recommends firefox. That was going to be the next thing I was going to look at.
