Let's get you straight first and then we will move on to firefox.
Spyware Blaster, as posted above, is a good extension for IE.
I would also run windows update to ensure you safe and and then visit Secunia
This will check installed applications to ensure they too are upto date.

It wouldn't let me. I get an error message saying that 'you must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility' :-(
Airwolf..yes, i'm beginning to wonder :-) however, the trial was due to end in a couple of weeks so I would be in the same position then. Plus, everyone says it slows your pc down, and that was my original problem. A couple of days ago, I stopped being able to get on this forum. As it is, I get in through the back door so to speak. I get to where I want to be by using the search facility.

I've run the scan, it identified 2 areas, java and adobe that need updating. I will do this.

for java -
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version6 and save it to your desktop.
- Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 10...allows end-users to run Java applications".
- Click the "Download" button to the right.
- Select your Platform: "Windows".
- Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
- Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- Click Continue and the page will refresh.
- Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
- Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
- Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
- Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe
- Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
Don't worry about the windows update error - you can visit that later.0 -
I've had a look at Dial A Fix but this says that it is for Windows 2K and XP, not Vista. In any event, I'm sure you must be ready for your bed. I'm sure that I'm going to dream of downloads and .exe files tonight lol....to be continued

Sorry, my bad. Forgot you are working with vista.0

Just before going to bed, I decided to try installing spybot again. Much to my surprise it worked :-)
I'm out tonight, but just need to check all of my settings, update adobe/java and read reluctant's tutorial on Avast and I think i'm there.
Thankyou so much for your help!
