Advice required please
New to this. I moved house, selling up and moving several hundred miles. I stopped paying of a loan to M&S. They wrote to me several times, then solicitors letters, I ignored all of them, (My mail was redirected from my previous address to a PO Box for 2 years) I recently got a letter from a company stating they had bought the debt and I should contact them with regards to paying up. Again, you guessed I ignored this. My redirection has now expired and the other week I received a call on my mobile asking for me by name and for me to confirm my Date of birth and address. I refused as I did not know who was calling and that they were on a witheld number. They stated they were from CABOLT FINANCE or somthing similar, I have never heard of them. They hung up.
Whats the score with me having to pay them?
I did receive another call a week later and stated that the person they were looking for was not on this number.
I have been very careful not too link my current address with my old one and am enjoying a debt free life, and paying everything on time and in full, but I do not apply for credit. I have recently got a credit card about 9months ago. All seems well, nearly been at my adress for 3years,. when can I apply for interest free credit without being too cagey?
Any advice/ experiences greatfully received.

If you have got yourself sorted now , why don't you just pay the debt, you admit you owe it ::)
why get more credit until you have sorted out this old debt?
My feeling is if you don't deal with it .................it might come back and haunt you
In other words, you will sort yourself out ,get back creditability and this will surface and ruin your finances in the future
Deal with it , pay it ,then you won't have to worry again0 -
I have had similar contact from a debt collection agency.
They knew where I lived and they alleged that I owed them money but It was easy to prove to them that they had very poor information. I could have appeared to them as an easy mark.
I checked with the original owners of the alleged debt and they confirmed that they have never heard of me and would never sell debt it any case.
Perhaps this is the first thing you should check out. Does M&S sell their debt. From memory their card has been through a few changes and attracted a lot of controversy.
You may be able to come to managable terms with your original debt with the aid of the Citizens Advice Bureau.
You cannot go on running away from your problems.
Its only my view and I know what it feels like to be hounded for money.
PS Never give out your date of birth over the phone.
It is in half of my credit card login scripts.
PPS Never say why you can't give out your date of birth, Mother's maiden name etc .0 -
Yeah can see your point, however having a clean new record, why should I pay this to someone who has bought the debt when they cant trace me?
Have tried M&S but they wouldnt comment whether they sell their debt off.0 -
