Best value PS3 80GB

  • Thanks for your responses...some great points raised, although my original question was about whether there was anybody that did the 80GB for less than £300 and other than the Amazon deal from Millionaire there were no other suggestions - should I assume that for the time being £300 is a competitive price?

    A few other points/questions....

A couple of you mentioned getting the 40GB version for £50 less (and poss upgrading at a later date). Does anybody already own a 40GB. If the upgrade is £50 and the price differential between the two models is the same isn't it easier just to go for the better spec?

Are there any other differences between 40 and 80GB models other than HD size?

Also, is it poss to upgrade the 80GB to larger HD, or can you stick an external hard drive on for additonal memory?

My last question is about the web surfing capability. Is it the case if you get a keyboard you are good to browse teh web through your TV? (reason for asking is this is a good feature to get the missus on board with my intended purchase!!)

Thanks for your help and advice.

I have the 40GB (no other difference from the 80GB)model and stuck in a 60GB HD from my broken laptop......a new HD from the internet will cost you less than 50 quid trust me. I don't even need the 60GB HD becuase the 40GB is enough I just did it because I wanted to see how easy it was.....trust me your wasting your money on a 80GB one

yes you can stick on a external HD to

You can even plug in a normal keyboard and mouse

Yep you can surf the net on it and you can even install LINUX on a PS3 (though don't expect awesome speeds)

My PS3 is connected via router (wired) and stream movies off my computer onto the TV so you get them upscaled
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

You're answer is in the first line. As the one of the Blue Ray pioneers, they've had to plough millions, possibly billions into the R&D and collaboration to get the technology to where it is. They will be looking at five, maybe ten year plans for the return on capital invested.

I agree that it is a long term return on investment project, but I was talking of the term "losses".

This is a planned and staged ROI project by Sony, and long term - no real losses will be made (unless the technology fails). You are talking of investments, not balance sheet losses: very different. A loss will only be made if Blu-Ray fails and then the ROI isn't met. Ploughing money into a new technology, is an investment, which will pay off providing all the research was correct. They are a massive company with huge reserves so can afford to invest in this aggressive manner.

This type of investment also saves companies millions, if not billions, in tax too, so it's not as bad as you might think - it's all relative to the company, size and ROI.

Blu-Ray drives can be bought for around £70 now (for a PC) so the price has dropped alot.
In reality it probably costs Sony very little to produce BR drives (under £20?) but they says its more as they add in all the R&D, marketing costs etc.
I doubt if a PS3 actually costs greater than £200 in physical time and labour etc.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Both the PS3 AND the Xbox 360 have made hugh losses so far on their systems. They need to sell 'X' number of units before they begin to make a profit. Ive not followed the xbox, but the PS3 is believed to need approx 5 years before theyre into a profit
HOWEVER, both firms make a LOT of money on games sales of which they take a big cut

  • ....so the question stills remains - where will I be able to purchase a PS3 from at the lowest price? Either 40 or 80GB?

i think that the 80gb comes with the dualshock 3 rather than the SIXAXIS. i have both controllers and can say that the dualshock has a much more sturdier build and generally feels better

Yep, the only difference between the 40gb & the 80gb is the 80gb model comes packaged with a dualshock2 controller which has the vibration function...

You would be far better buying a cheaper 40gb & putting in a 320gb sata 5400 hd for around £60 as believe me, you will soon use up the hard drive as every game installs around 5gb & if you get PlayTV etc you can record all your freeview programmes/movies to the hd.
I use mine to surf the internet wirelessly using my 40" lcd as a monitor & it's amazing as a media hub wirelessly streaming movies/pics/films from my pc........

You certainly won't be disappointed when you get one.....
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

The 160GB PS3 is released Friday so it maybe worth waiting a week or 2. It will be a bit dearer (around £340) but it may have an effect on what the price retailers charge for the 40 and 80's. PC world seems to have reasonable deals (with quidco cashback too!)
