It seems the 80GB PS3 is consistently priced at £300 across the board although some companies will chuck in a game with that. Does anybody know of any better deals?
Or does anybody have any insights into whether the price will drop after Christmas (as it has already come down a fair bit since its original introduction)? It still feels quite pricey at £300!!

Still pricey at £300? THEY'RE MAKING A LOSS ON EVERY SYSTEM THEY SELL. You cannot build a PS3 for £300. It's got a Blu-Ray drive for a start. Have you seen the price of standalone blu-ray players? They're around £180 upwards.
And Sony announced they have no intention of dropping the price, something which is even less likely in the UK as the value of the £ drops against the $0 -
Hi there, I've seen some shops still have some stock of the 40gb version and are doing them for around £250, might be worth looking at!
The hard disks can be upgraded in the PS3's fairly easily if you wish for more room although its a risky move in the first 12 months as it could invalidate your warranty.
Conor is right though, even tho its more expensive than the XBox for example, you get a blu ray player and full hd straight out of the box and it also has wireless built in so you dont have to pay extra for an adapter.
I've got the 40gb version and i think its great!Useful is beautiful0 -

why pay for a 80gb (uk 80gb ones will NOT play PS2 games)one when the 40gb one does the same thing??? and you can easily upgrade the HD for less than 50 quid (if you feel the need to)......and it will NOT invalidate your warranty
I've had both the 360 and ps3 and I just think the PS3 is better and easier to use and you don't have to pay to get on the net etc like you have to on a 360If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly
I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right0 -

that sounds like kind of thing a company would say to justify a ridiculous price. remember how expensive dvd players were? they charge what they charge because they can get away with it. if there isnt a price drop before xmas then i can see one happening in march. well they often do one in march dont they? well they have in the past.0 -

As Sony make the technology, it's highly unlikely they are making a loss! Sony were one of the key players in the format coming too.
As they have their finger in so many pies, even if the margins are tight (which I'm not entirely sure I believe) they recoup it from all sorts of other joint projects, game sales, movies etc.
They are still expensive due to the take up, in a few years time they'll be £20-£30 quid, just like DVD drives are today.0 -
The PlayStation 3's initial production cost is estimated to have been $805.85 for the 20 GB model and US$840.35 for the 60 GB model. However, they were priced at US$499 and US$599 respectively, meaning that every unit was sold at an estimated loss of $250, contributing to Sony's games division posting an operating loss of ¥232.3 billion (US$1.97 billion) in the fiscal year ending March 2007.As Sony make the technology, it's highly unlikely they are making a loss! Sony were one of the key players in the format coming too.
As of January 2008, each unit costs around $400 to manufacture.
Sony put $100millions into pushing Blu-Ray.0 -

Didn't sony use the 65nm RSX graphics processor in the PS3 8GB?
If so energy consumption is reduced along with heat output, thus potentially extending the life expectancy of the machine compared to the 40 / 60 GBMy farts hospitalize small children

You're answer is in the first line. As the one of the Blue Ray pioneers, they've had to plough millions, possibly billions into the R&D and collaboration to get the technology to where it is. They will be looking at five, maybe ten year plans for the return on capital invested.0 -
