At the risk of sounding really stupid - if it is used mainly for internet/email - am I right in assuming that once you have loaded your browser the screen with Linux looks exactly the same as it would with Windows? Thanks.
ps sorry if this is off-topic
Hi,no its not a stoopid enquiry,we all have gaps in our knowledge.
Linux is an operating system just like windows.
In its infancy linux was basically a command line operating system,i.e you got a nice black screen that you had to had to type commands into,a bit like DOS. Not very friendly.
gradually a GUI (graphical interface) has been developed and refinded so that on a full install of a linux distribution, you have a very good windows like desktop.
see www.ubuntu.com
Some of the netbooks on sale have customised /cut down versions of Linux but still you have a graphical interface i.e a desktop of some kind. This is becuase of limited storage space. Many netbooks use memory cards rather than a hard drive.
Best thing to do is go play with one and see if it would suit you.
I'd much prefer a netbook with full install ubuntu such as this one which also has an 80gig HD

I notie it has Linpus Linux lite version. It would be nice if it had full version Ubuntu or similar. Had a little play with one in PC World today and was tempted. A useful bit of kit especially for travelling. I'll wait till they come down a bit more...! My guess is that manufacturers have misjudged this niche market as lots of them are making netbooks, some with windows (bad move) and i dont really think they will sell in the big numbers they expect.
I read something recently, I think from one of the high ups in Asus, saying they are having 4x the amount of Linux based EEE's being returned compared to the XP based ones. People know Windows, and Windows is selling well. Giving customers a choice isn't a bad move

Most people who are buying these don't even know that Windows isn't installed until they notice there's no Start button.
I bought an Acer A110 in PC World. The *expert* salesperson tried to sell me Norton with it. I pointed out to him that it wouldn't be much use on Linux. He looked bewildrered.

The knowledge of PC world staff never ceases to amaze. I remember being the queue behind someone who had a computer where the optical drive wouldn't recognise DVD disks (this was a few years ago now) The PC world 'help'desk wanted to charge some ridiculous amount to look at the problem. At least until he turned the computer round and I noticed it says CD-Rom on the front :rolleyes:0 -

Good one. I don't know how they manage to persuade anyone that they know what they're talking about.

Yes,thats what i was thinking too and your post seems to confirm.I read something recently, I think from one of the high ups in Asus, saying they are having 4x the amount of Linux based EEE's being returned compared to the XP based ones. The mass consumer market really,in the main, only knows windows. All they see is a wee laptop. They still expect to game and do all the typical windows stuff on it.
I wonder if PC world and the like have upskilled their workforce with some Linux knowledge?
Its nothing to be afraid of but people just need to know that they are not buying a windows PC !0 -
Hey Everyone,
Its homealone's son here, as my mum previously put in this thread that she was thinking of buying the acer one A11OAB netbook wireless. she now has a dell laptop. My birthday is 2 weeks away and I decided that id like the acer netbook the only problem both me and my mum seemed to be having is in places like pc world, currys etc is even though the price thats stated on both sites is £174.95 the problem is that it is not in stock anywhere and the only way we would be able to work around it is if we bought a £219 one where the only difference is its a different make which is a big jump from the price I would of liked to buy it for. I have now came to a decision to get the HP Compaq 2133 Mini-Note VIA C7-M ULV Processor from ebuyer for £189 which is a good price and they have alot of stock. What does everyone else think????MarkAldridge0
