Insurance for my 'uninsured' car

Hi,

i was a bit baffled as to how to name this thread so sorry if it doesn't make sense.

I have just got a new car and transfered my fully comp insurance to it.

My old car is sitting on my drive way and has just been sold through ebay. I live not far from Edinburgh and the buyer would like to get the train/bus to edinburgh and have me meet him there.

Will my fully comp insurance on my new car cover me to drive the old car up to meet him?

The alternative would be to pick him up in the new car and take him back for the car he just bought, so no major issue if this is not possible.

Cheers,

I doubt it's possible as the third party entitlement is normally for a car not owned by you.

Pick him up at the station, then bring him to your home do the deal and then he can drive off. If he pulls out, you can tell him to make his own way to the station :D

If you drive in your old car to pick him up . He will then have to drive you home .
So its not about saving time or effort. Make it easy , pick him up in new car, then he drives away from your house with his 'new' car. No problems about insurance for you.

  • i would just have gotten a bus home as he would be going in the other direction, but you are probably right about picking them up and taking them back. Avoids all doubt regarding the insurance as well.

    cheers folks!

Quick answer to this part is NO. Some good suggestions on here.

Taking it for a test drive might be an issue as I imagine the buyer won't have insurance to cover it either, I imagine 90% of folk who take a car for a test drive are not insured how you handle this is up to you but just be aware of the consequences.

i presume he will have some kind of insurance as he is driving it over 100 miles home.

Speak to your insurance company. A few years ago, I had the same situation, they covered both car's but only for a fixed period whilst I sold the old car (They covered the old car on a temporary cover note - for a fixed period). They didn't charge any extra for this service. I can't remember which insurance company I was with either.

i asked at the time i changed the cars over on the policy how much it would be to cover the old car for a month on 3rd party, they quoted £73. It was only £300 a year for the fully comp policy. Even the guy in their call centre thought it was OTT.

If I was the buyer I would insist on picking the car up from your house. Just so there was some recourse if it turns out to be dodgy/stolen etc.

I sent my car in for some warranty work not long after buying it. The garage offered me a courtesy car but asked if I was covered via insurance for the courtesy car... "Sure" I said, I'm fully comp (and have been for 20yrs).
The garage asked me to double check using their phone just to make sure (a customer the previous week hand a knock and the insurance refused to help even though he was fully comp).

I rang and was surprised to hear I was not covered to drive a courtesy car!!
For TWO DAYS use I had to pay £17 extra and have a cover note sent out.
The garage paid the £17 for me (as mine was in for a warranty repair) but it was an eye opener. I always assumed I could drive a courtesy car.
