Insurance for my 'uninsured' car

If I was the buyer I would insist on picking the car up from your house. Just so there was some recourse if it turns out to be dodgy/stolen etc.
I sent my car in for some warranty work not long after buying it. The garage offered me a courtesy car but asked if I was covered via insurance for the courtesy car... "Sure" I said, I'm fully comp (and have been for 20yrs).
The garage asked me to double check using their phone just to make sure (a customer the previous week hand a knock and the insurance refused to help even though he was fully comp).
I rang and was surprised to hear I was not covered to drive a courtesy car!!
For TWO DAYS use I had to pay £17 extra and have a cover note sent out.
The garage paid the £17 for me (as mine was in for a warranty repair) but it was an eye opener. I always assumed I could drive a courtesy car.

You are virtually never comprehensively covered on your own insurance to drive a courtesy car. Whilst you may have third party cover, depending whether your certificate of insurance says you can drive other cars, you won't be comprehensive.
The one exception to this is that many policies explicitly state that, if you have an accident and they are repairing your car, the courtesy car they supply is covered on the insurance. Which makes sense.0 -

me too, it was the buyer who requested i meet him at the station. nothing to lose from my point of view. although the car is completely legal and i have described it as honestly as possible. i have nothing to hide.
interesting point about the courtesy cars. i have always presumed fully comp would cover that. The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0
