What Is Cheapest Way Of Keeping 1471, 1571 and Caller Display?

Apologies if this has been discussed before, but after searching I couldn't find the answer.

I have AOL Talk which gives me free calls at all times to 01, 02, 03 numbers. I still have my line rental with BT on Unlimited UK* Weekend calls (Option 1?)

I am aware that I must make 2 "chargeable" calls per month or 6 calls per quarter with BT in order to keep 1471 and 1571 as a free service, otherwise BT impose a charge.

I'm sure I read ages ago that calls at weekend were classed as chargeable, but just at no cost. Could anyone confirm this is actually the case?

Or if not, what is the cheapest solution to keep these services as free?

    1471 is free anyway.

With regard to 1571, on behalf of your friends and family, may I urge you just to dump it.

With regard to Caller Display, inclusive calls now count - so making a few weekend 01, 02 or 03 calls with the 1280 prefix should do the job (assuming AOL have not followed Sky's example and started ignoring the 1280 prefix).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Thanks for that info and yes I did mean to include caller display as the final option that has to be paid for if I don't make the 6 calls per quarter.

But could I just ask if you are sure that the caller display service is free if you make 6 weekend calls in a quarter. As this is what it says on the BT website
** BT residential customers making some calls on the BT network can opt in to receive Caller Display for free, subject to availability.

Seems a bit vague - some calls?

    The document http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/dynamicmodules/pagecontentfooter/pageContentFooterPopup.jsp?pagecontentfooter_popupid=13408
is quite useful for clarifying issue like this. Paragraph 33 of the "BT Telephony Service price terms" section does say "six inclusive or chargeable calls".
  • Thanks for that link and I take my hat off to you for having read through that document. Impressed

OK, it is a good idea to also be aware of paragraph 26 in the same section which says at least 1 chargeable call per month to stay on the unlimited weekend plan (no mention there of inclusive calls counting).
  • Thanks yet again for this info. I see that these terms and conditions came into effect on the 27th October 2008.

It would therefore appear (under para 26) that you now have to make one chargeable call per month via BT to retain the Unlimited Weekend Plan. It doesn't state what happens if you don't?

So to summarise, it seems to me that in order to keep the BT call services with no charge, I have to make 1 chargeable call per month (3 per quarter) and 3 more inclusive calls per quarter.

Is this the way others see it?
