warm front dispair!

Options
I recently received a quote from warm front for a replacement boiler, which has an excess of £772.00. We have no heating at all, and am really concerned about the coming months. I am a student nurse and my partner is unable to work at present, due to a work related injury, and we cannot find this kind of money. We have 3 children and the youngest (who is 2) is my main concern.
I have contacted the local council, who have informed me that the local scheme is on hold, due to no funds. So i have decided to contact my local MP, and would also like to contact the executive of eaga (who just so happen to own the company the quote can from, iguana).
I can't seen to find the contact email address of the eaga exec, and was wondering if anyone might have this info.
I would also appreciate some advice on who else i should contact.

    Hi

It's a very cosy set up isn't it?;). You might find this of some interest http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=153560&sid=95b3a5d39e241998bfe35ac4cc7b3693

Listen to the Radio 4 link.
I don't have any contact info but Steve Ladyman has a page on his website (if you don't already know) so that's the way to go I would say.

Is your existing boiler a lost cause?

I would be staggered not to mention gobsmacked if that was true.

I couldn't agree more. Beware of a high profile company that have blue vans telling you parts are no longer available for old boilers, what that actually means is that they won't supply the parts but they do have an estimator on hand to come and quote for a new efficient condensing combi that will save you a fortune in the long run  .

Assuming you have a Baxi Bermuda, these are generally infinitely repairable, provided the heat exchanger hasn't completely rotted and the flue liner is ok (and even replacing the liner would be cheaper than a replacement boiler). Gas valves, burners, injectors, gaskets, thermostats, thermocouples were all readily available last time I checked so get another opinion on it, preferably from a boiler repair specialist.

Most back boilers I've removed over the years are due to the homeowner wanting to update their home, not because they are irrepairable.

    Hi

Which part is 'obsolete' or what was the reason for condemning it?

  • the estimator didn't even look at the boiler, he walked in, spotted we had a back boiler and told us that it couldn't be fixed due to the parts no longer being made/ available. I just took what he was saying to me as being true.

They've been doing this for a long time, they often try and tell people that they are dangerous too, which they are not if properly serviced and ventilated.

So no-one has actually taken off the firefront and looked at your boiler?? I'm not saying it is, but the problem could be something as little as a £3 thermocouple. Until a properly qualified and trustworthy person looks at it you won't know.
  • I used an excellent local man a few years ago for a heating system in my old property, so I think I will give him a call in the morning. Hopefully it will be something that isn't major, and is cheep to repair.

Hi, one of these people should be able to respond. I had problems with them too!

    Good luck.
