if there is any chance of you getting a games console like a ps3 or a xbox 360 or if there is any chance of you ever getting a blu ray player then 1080p is the way to go. as i have recently changed from a 720 tv to a full hd tv i think even if the picture source isnt 1080p it is still better on a full hd tv than on a 720 tv.

I just have a 720p tv, I have Humax pvr 9200 providing SD to tv, a Wii 480p, DVD player that upscales up to 1080p which isnt bad either and a pc that can provide 720p depending on content we do have some HD stuff to play

I though about getting 1080p tv last October but at that time 1080p tvs were a lot more than a 720p tv although its not that much more now

I think a lot of it deends on how good your tv can scale things if its SD broadcast I find it fine on my Samsung HD tv and I am real picky on quality

I think 720p tv is fine for most things, the bigger the tv the better it would look in 1080p if you have a good source like a blue ray player

I think sky HD and Freesat are all 720p anyhow so blue ray either via dedicated player or via pc which is around £65- £80 for a read only blue ray player

We have 50'' 1080i Panasonic and had HDtv (cancelled today though) but no Blu-Ray and the picture is really good. My son has a 42'' 1080p Panasonic and watching Blu-Ray on it is absolutely amazing. I'm used to having a good picture but his is so real life. It's a different class altogether.

generally the tvs in places like currys are only showing a sd picture and they purposely mess up the settings for some reason. however in my local currys they do have one or two tvs connected to a blu ray player and the picture is excellent.

I have a contact in the inside, and they are convinced that the primary format will be 720, but can't remember which.

    On the inside of what?
    Manufacturers?
    Broadcasters?
    Games developers?
    Ofcom?

As DVD replaced VHS, Blue-ray is basically the next generation of DVD players but with the Ability to play HD content disks, at present the players are quite expensive, over £150
