Router upgrade?

Hello my ISP is with Utility Warehouse and the local exchange is being upgraded to handle speeds up to 24meg next week. I have a Belkin router which is about 4 yrs old. Do I need an ADSL2 router to take advantage of the upgraded speed? I am only 900m from the exchange so I should see a dramatic difference hopefully!!

If i do need a new router..any recommendations?

Thanks.

  • What do Utility Warehouse suggest?

I have always found Netgear products to be robust.

You would need a ADSL2+ capable router to take advantage of up to 24Mbps. What speed do you get at the moment and out of interest, what ISP is listed if you do a speedtest here?

Thanks, I don't know anyone who uses UW for their ISP, so didn't know who their supplier was. You seem to be getting a good speed now, so you are likely to gain the benefit of the exchange upgrade to ADSL2+. There are plenty of ADSL2+ routers available if UW do not supply you with one, or their prices are to high see here.

  • thanks Expresso for the advice. I do have a Netgear ADSL2 router that Sky provided me before I moved house. That router is of course locked down by Sky....is there an easy way to overcome this? I was looking at the ZyXEL routers as they seem to have favourable comments.
  • Have a look at this - http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/skyDG834GT_flash.htm

    may help to unlock it

Thanks for the link above.....only thing is I've lost the Sky installation disc :embarasse. Anyway I found this from HUKD and went for the ADSL version.

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

At just under 7 meg its nothing fancy and pretty pointless for the op to upgrade there router if this is the best there line has to offer although 900m from the exchange I would expect a lot more.

The best thing you can do is go to the link below and put ur details in and it will tell you the best speed you can achieve on your line.

So say if the best your line can give you is 8meg then its pointless upgrading your router.
