If your company already uses Citrix etc then the IT department would have set up the appropriate VPNs and settings etc and you're best getting the details and set up off them if you want to preempt what your line manager would do anyway.

In a company environment I'd certainly avoid trying to set up your own system with the likes of logmein and VNC since you may be compromising security and possibly violating your company's IT procedures. I don't nkow what your company is or does but in some places I've worked at that kind of thing can end up as a prosecutable offence never mind being sacked, no matter the good intentions. Your company may be more informal though.
