How can I find out an ip address

I have loaded vnc onto my home computer so that I can log into my work computer from home.
Once I double click onto vnc it is asking me for the server. I presume this is the ip address of my work computer but I am unsure.
If it does mean this can anyone tell me how I can find out the address without having to drive into work and checking.

Thanks

I dont think you will be able to, unless your server has been registered with an internet DNS provider and you know the name of the server.

VNC really doesnt seem a particulary secure way to connect to your works network. Have you got a VPN setup?

Thanks no I don't really have anything. I needed out IT department to work on my computer because I had a problem. They installed vnc so they could remotely work on my machine. They saved it on my desktop and I thought if I zipped it and emailed it to my home pc I could install it and it would save me having to go in all the time.

Unless your work IT dept runs a very insecure network then, at the very least, their internal network will be front-ended with a router and firewall, both of which would prevent you from connecting to your work computer.

You would need to add a Network Address Translation rule to the router and an exception within the firewall. Your IT dept might do this for you if you're lucky, but most won't.

Knowing the address of your work computer won't help, as it will typically be one which starts with 10. or 192.168. None of these addresses can be routed or used out in the "real world" of the internet.

-yep - vnc usually needs an IP address. which will have problems once you try to connect to another local network. Your IT department would be able to use it as they would be on the same local network as your works PC - so the IP addressing wouldnt be a problem there.

Talk to your IT dept, they will have remote working solutions in place MD's don't have to come in everyday to check their email!
  • They won't check their email via their office PC though.
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

you need the ip address of your router (if your using one at home) and set up port opening in the router for vnc (like 5900)

if you home pc isn't connected through a router then you just need the ip address of your pc (found in network settings)

if you have vista as your OS then you will need to use RealVNC as its the only FREE one that works with vista (xp should be easy to set up)

I run VNC on my vista using my iphone and it took a while but now its easy.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

Have found out that most of the people that work in the office and at home use laptops. They use something called Secure????? and then use something called citrix!
My line manager is back tomorrow so I'll ask her to investigate into it as she has a laptop. If they can't help me then the work won't get done I'm not spending another complete weekend in this bloody office.

    Cheers for your help
