Can anyone advise which make of lens to go for with a new digital camera please? Which make is considered to be the best?

Depends what camera you buy.
Are you looking for an "aftermarket" lense, or a whole package?

it will really depend on what budget you have in mind
I'm using this one at the moment which is now around £200 as a newer model has just been released, the pics are superb for a camera of this price mainly due to the 10X SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON Optical Zoom LensI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Yes ... I should have been rather more specific I guess. I am wanting something costing £150 to no more than £250 - good quality package, rather than a lens which is added on. Also, I want something with rapid shutter, compact and not heavy, with a large screen (the old eyesight is not what it was!), with micro facility, and easy to use - it has to be fairly idiot proof.
And above all, I want a good quality lens. I am not wanting to print anything larger than A4, but if I zoom in I want the picture to still be crystal.
So, with all of the above in mind, what make of lens should I be going for?0 -
Check out the Sigma site. I've had some good results with mine. They even traded my old lens, which wasn't Sigma, in.0

If you want a simple point & shoot camera, I would opt for (and have) the Panasonic Lumix DMC9. It takes great quality photo's (certainly good enough for A4 prints). Stops any shudder from your hand movements and has a macro mode to do close up pictures.
Might be slightly over your budget but if you wait until the January sales I'm sure you could pick up a bargain.Treat others as you would like to be treated :A0 -
Hi Loobeylou, my wifes is called that by the way along with Lu, Laverne and Lube.
I got Lube a camera last week from Jessops but I always check this site for reviews first. They do recommendations and in the end opted for a 4mb Panasonic camera with 6X optical zoom and image stablisher (one you got a camera with that you never wont one without it) Lube got this camera Panasonic DMC-LZ1

I've just come back from tenerife with some superb pics, and the newer model is only £249I am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Just to make it clear, although lenses are still important on digital cameras, your rather limited in choice. The majority of camera's come with their "own" brand lens. Although some panasonics and some sonys have branded lens. Although lenses are actually more important on digicams, you will need to take the camera as a whole.
Definitely check out https://www.steves-digicams.com as recommended as you'll see the reviews there look into lens quality quite specifically. They'll look at the camera as a whole rather than a name on a piece of glass...
