Nightmare and Dangerous neighbours, help please.

Hi Guys,

We are having a problem with some neighbours of ours and i'm looking for advice.

The family that live in the house whose garden backs on to ours are extreme drug users, the mum and her 3 sons live there and they have always been a problem to the police but never anyone else really. Occasionally we have the sheds and garages broken into and it's always them, looking for stuff to sell for drugs.

But last month, things took a turn for the worse! It was a Sunday evening, about 9pm at night, i was sitting in my living room where we have som large french doors, they were closed but not locked as our 3 dogs are always going in and out the garden. I popped to the loo and while upstairs the dogs started going ape, when i got back downstairs, one of the sons was standing in my living room with a crow bar. He wasn't threatening me but was trying to escape some people in he's house, had jumped our the garden wall, down through our garden and into the house. We called the police and they come and got him, it was very scary indeed.

Last night the same happened again, but this time it was the police chasing him and they caught him in our garden (wrecked all our new fencing!!!) but this time he had a knife, which changes everything.

All the advice the police could give me is to put up a security light! Because drugs users are scared of the light maybe?????

Anyway, my question is, does anyone know if i can put barbed wire across the top of the wall (brick wall about 6ft tall) or anything that will stop them more than a flaming security light. My OH reckons we could get in trouble with the police for using barbed wire?

Any advice would be good, as i am really worried about this now.

Thanks
V

  • What a nightmare for you - I'm so sorry!
These scum need to be stopped in their tracks; legal or not I'd put broken glass or even something like carpet grippers on top of the wall.
If YOU get into trouble for that then I'd make sure the local press/media were soon involved. Good luck, and DO hassle the police when anything happens - that's what they are there for!

We have razor wire at the back , it points inwards on our side so is all legal and ok, get it up, then get some hawthron bushes in to, that will stop them, carpet gripers are great at stopping people in thier tracks to

I'm pretty sure that you can’t use barbed wire, broken glass, mains electricity or anything else that may harm someone who is exercising his right to make your life hell.

What these scum need is a short, sharp dose of good old fashioned community service followed by a vigorous regime of counselling. That should sort the problem out.
  • a nice plant called pyrocanthea (not sure of spelling though) its a legal plant but VERY prickly. Suggest some Holly plants too. Make it uncomfortable for them....and possibly concrete slab your side of the fence...so they land on hard times :)

If you own the property....be careful reporting them to the Council for anything. It has to be declared on your sale documentation or risk prosecution.

How about using that non-drying paint? Had to go for blood tests this morning, and on the way in I noticed a wall with a big sign on it saying it was painted with that. Can't remember what it's called though!

What a horrid thing to happen!

Its a shame but it sounds like they are getting themselves in a bit of a mess if people are coming round and he needs knives and crowbars to protect himself.

I think what you will find is these people will probably catch up with him and he wont be able to get over the fence, i wouldnt make to much of a bother about it, i know its hard but the last thing you want is a ongoing dispute.

I know its hard but i think this one will sort itself out, i dont condone his actions but for someone to be chased out of his house, he must have been very scared.

You could ask the police to charge him for the criminal damage to the fence, or just ask for them to fix the fence otherwise you will be asking the police to charge them with criminal damage.

I hope it sorts itself out for you and you dont have any more bother, no one needs to have that happen to them.

A family friend wanted to put barbed wire on the wall outside his flat. He consulted the police who said he couldn't do it as "it might injure a burglar and then they would have recourse to sue". It's unbelievable but this is what it has come to in this topsy turvy country.

I hope you find some solution. Good luck

I think you are meant to put a notice up warning that you've used this paint. Also no good if you have cats, as they love walking it into the house.

This is not the only place that it is available from - Google anti burglar strips and check prices.
  • just a thought,

you say you have some dogs already...how about getting a nice big rottie/doberman/german shepperd. Most people (drugged up or not) would think twice before entering a garden with such a beast in it !!

perhaps you could also forget to put your garden rake away a few times so that he gets a comedy smack in the face when he steps on the end!
