Carpetright - Bald Carpet Help Please

4 years ago we replaced our carpet in the lounge, dining room, hall, stairs and landing with a carpet from CarpetRight. As we have young children I wanted something durable and easy to keep looking nice. We chose a synthetic carpet and the guy came out to measure, we ordered and paid. When the fitter came to fit the carpet it didnt fit the lounge & dining room (its all one room), they had measured wrong and they had to order more but the model we had chosen didnt come wide enough so our only choice was a wool version which was a colour match. We couldnt go for another carpet as the fitter had already laid the hall, stairs and landing so we needed to match on colour.
The carpet came and was fitted. Early this year I noticed what I thought was a mark on the carpet anyway eventually one day I realised that the "mark" felt odd so went down on hands and knees and realised that the pile was nearly gone in that area!!!!! I did a good inspection and found another area the same, they are quite hard to see due to the colour.
The areas are not in heavy trafic places but near the chairs, one is where my 9 year old daughter sits and her feet have only just started touching the floor so its not her feet rubbing it. I hoover daily and wash with proper carpet liquid and a Vax every 3 or 4 months.
I contacted Carpetright who said they would talk to the supplier. I have now heard back that they are going to offer us £112!!!!!!!!!!!! This is no where near enough to replace the carpet. They say they wont replace the full amount because of its age and that they take 20% off per year. They wont send anyone to inspect it to see what the problem is but want us to cut out a piece of the carpet to send it to them!!!!!
Carpetrights website discusses a 5 year guarantee, it doesnt mention any restrictions etc.
I cant believe that a carpet can only last 4 years!!!!!! Can anyone please give me any advice over what to do about this please? I wonder if we can do anything more because it wasnt the carpet we chose? If we had had the synthetic carpet maybe this wouldnt have happened, we went for synthetic in the first place as we had wanted something hard wearing and I wouldnt say 4 years is hard wearing. Does anyone think that this could be classed as being fit for purpose?
Please help.
Many thanks

Sounds like just normal wear and tear really. Is suspect hoovering every day doesn't help either as hoovers are not exactly gentle and its proably the equivelent of walk over the same spot a dozen times.
Is it possible anything was spilt on that spot that could have rotted the carpet (something acidic perhaps)
We don't have any carpets for the reaon of wear and pets like destroying them ;-)
Its also a lot quicker/easier to keep floorboards/laminate clean!0 -
Carpetrights website discusses a 5 year guarantee, it
have a read through it and see what it says, then quote it back to them in a phonecall and followed up by recorded letter.0 -
Usually you would maybe need different quality carpets for different rooms, unless you got the most hardwearing one.Wee you satisfied at the time that the quality was had wearing enough for the various rooms.0

I worked for Guardsman before (protection for sofas) and wear & tear was never covered, which is what this seems to be I'm afraid.0

Hi
Thanks for the replies so far but its not wear and tear. A carpet fitter looked at it and said he had never seen anything like it, I have had carpets for many years and have never had this problem before and most importantly if its wear and tear why didnt it go in the heavy use places such as doorways, pathways etc?
No we didnt spill anything acidic on it. Any spills are dealt with immediately and are never anything more than food or the water which all my children drink.
Any other suggestions please?
Thanks

I've had this with wool carpet before - but I was due to move house so left it!
I know exactly what you're talking about and I suggest you advise the company that you know you are within your 5 year warranty, and that you're finding the product 'not suitable for the purpose it was bought'. Just because you're coming to the end of said warranty, doesn't mean you should expect, or they should provide a lesser service.
Do you have the original agreement? Have you carefully perused the contents?
This is basic consumer rights, you've purchased a product with a promise that it won't go wrong for five entire years - even if it did, they'd fix it (which is not a pie-in-the-sky assumption!) What are guarantees for, after all?No chocolate, cosmetics or clothes to be bought before xmas day 14! ~ NPower eBay target £541.670 -
Looks like the guarantee is on a sliding scale of payment though,so it's prob in the small print.0

As it's wool, are there any signs of moths?
Have you looked under or behind bits of furniture you don't normally move? If it is them, you'll find more bald spots, and possibly some eggs/larvae.0 -
Have you thought about the sale of good act in this instance - items have to be fit for purpose.
It is reasonable to expect to get more than 4 years out of a carpet, Try the consumer direct website for details.£10 per day Challenge (Oct)
