Hi,

I'm looking to ditch my o2 £35 a month contract which is about to end next month and switch to PAYG as I'm pretty happy with the w880 phone and I've got a spare (slightly damaged) K800i so I don't need a new phone. Really I'd like a T-Mobile G1 but £40 / month is too expensive and the phone has a few problems (battery life, signal strenght, GPS signal strength)... and anyways I'm here to save some money!

So, what's the best deal for a PAYG sim only deal? Ideally I'd like to stick with O2 as they get the best signal in my house, and it's frustrating missing calls at home with t-mobile and the others and having to lean out of the bathroom window to send a text (really).

I hardly ever use the phone to *make* calls, but I really absolutely totally must have it to be able to receive calls reliably. I'm an IT contractor and most, nay all, of my work comes from agents phoning me up. If I miss a call from an agent, and miss out on a job that's many years worth of mobile phone bills wiped out in one day!

I don't want to be forced to top the thing up every month if I'm not using it.

Most of the chatting I do on the phone is with my wife, and I can "prank" her and get her to call me back using her iPhone which has got 600 free minutes a month... so we might as well try and soak that up a bit more.

I've been looking around at the various deals and it's very confusing, so perhaps someone who's already been through all the small print can help me out with some suggestions?

Thanks!

Steve

What is the Vodafone signal like, if thats OK then Asda Mobile is cheapest for low usage by some way
  • I looked at the sim only deals on all the networks and decided on O2 as they were the only ones who included multimedia messages in with the free message allowance (at a 4:1 ratio). It also includes text messages from abroad (same ratio). Video calling mins also come out of your free minute allowance and voicemail is free. I went for the £20 per month one with 600 mins and 1000 texts plus a free bolt on with unlimted web access ( you can have more mins or O2 to O2 calls or landline calls or weekend calls, your choice). With all this i doubt i will ever be paying over the basic £20. There is also a £15 month one with 200 mins and 400 text and unlimited O2 to O2 calls (not sure which network your wife is on.

I have to say the O2 £15 a month sim only is very good. You get the amounts as listed above and if you ever do need to go slightly over they just bill you on top.Ive had mine now for about a year and find it averages out to near £15 most months. Its a monthly contract so if it does not work out for you you can cancel in 30 days.If anyone is also on O2 the calls are free O2 to O2 which saves quite a bit too.

I'm on orange dolphin. Get free texts when I top up and £10 lasts over a month.
