Nu-drive for manual wheelchairs

Options
Has anyone tried this nu-drive system https://www.nu-drive.com/nudrive/ for the manual wheelchairs?

I am trying to save money on my petrol. I am told by the bus company that I will not be allowed to take a mobility scooter on the bus, but I am assuming I would be allowed to take a manual pushchair if I can fold it and lift it on.

I have seen this Nu-drive system advertised, and have made enquiries, but I just wondered has anyone tried it yet:confused: How strong would I have to be??

  • I know of someone who has tried this and they were very impressed. He said it took a lot less effort than using the pushrims. You should be allowed to take a manual chair on. I'm in Glasgow and a lot of the buses are accessible and have space for a manual chair with me in it. Check with your bus company to see what their disabled access policy is (they should have one if they're council subsidised). If you're ever in Edinburgh, try LRT buses, they're about the best service I've seen for wheelchair users anywhere.

Thanks for posting this - DH has been struggling with his manual chair and we were starting to look into other forms of propulsion - this may be just what he needs.

  • Furrytractor, if you're in Glasgow, where did your friend try it out? I don't think that there are any dealers in Scotland yet. I was told the nearest one is in South Shield, but I have been offered a trial in the next few weeks, because they are trying to find scottish dealers.

  • Earthmother, this company are now offering free home trial and fitting, plus, if you do decide to buy the system, they are offering a 21day money back guarantee.
I think I will give it a try, if I can find the money.

It certainly looks interesting; but I couldn't see any indication of cost on the website. Does anyone know roughly what the outlay would be?

Thanks - I obviously missed that bit. I'm not the world's best at seeing what's in front of my nose!:D

  • It wasn't immediately obvious - like most websites (especially when something's expensive) they tuck the prices away on another page so you don't immediately change your mind.

  • Sorry, I've not been on here all day. Yes, I know that it's £349, but I feel that if it allows me to get out, using the free bus pass instead of the car, then it would be almost pay for itself.
Plus I would have the advantage of increased independancy, as I might not be able to drive much longer, without expensive adaptations to my car.

  • I've had my nu drive units fitted for 2 months now & my experience has been really good.
My main reason for purchasing them was to avoid cold & wet hands in winter & they have achieved this.
Added advantage is that my hands don't come into contact with the usual yuck (dog mess, mud, squashed worms, sticky sweets, chewing gum, etc) from the pavements & roads.
I'm sitting up straighter in my chair & breathing easier.
I'm quite strong in the shoulders so most days I don't gain an awful lot of mechanical advantage from the levers but my condition varies & on my weaker days they are really useful.
My experience of customer service has been excellent. A minor problem in the first couple of weeks was sorted out almost immediately & completely to my satisfaction.
This kit is excellent value for money, I've seen similar kit at more than 4 times the price.
    Hope this helps
