OP, have you done anything further on this?!?!

I am shocked by their poor service and would suggest complaining like hell to get it sorted. Its simply not good enough. Go back to the store with the TV if you can and speak to the maneger. Even better if its a saturday and you can speak slightly loudly and let all the other potential customers know what they are like!!!

    Good luck

I had a smilar problem with Comet 5 years ago, when I almost punched the manager because of his lies about getting a new replacement for a washing machine, I did go on a Saturdays and my wife and I spoke to customers in the shop some walked out in disgust, it didnt help though. I ended up contacting the head man at Comet who is Amercian he was very nice and gave me a new washing machine and £20 vouchers. I never shop with Comet locally now, but have used them online.

Hope you get this sorted it isnt acceptable.

I was almost conned into buying an American style fridge a few years ago by a SA in Comet where I live. She told me it was the only one left, and this model had been disscontinued. (she was hardcore with the selling) The fridge was scratched to hell, and the dirt on the inside and outside was terrible.

She offered me £20 off the fridge, and told me that I should be greatful (in her patronizing tone) as that is all she would get, even working for Comet. I then complained about how dirty it was also, so she called for a cleaner, who brought out the most disgusting dish cloth ever. It was black/grey from dirt, and the cleaner was there wiping the drink dispenser and ice dispenser paddles with it  (this is where you would rest your nice clean glass). I think she really expected me to feel better for that cleaning exercise.

Anyway, cutting a long story short, I didn't take her up on such a "generous" offer, and she complained to me for wasting her time (I literally laughed at her). I went off and decided to find the fridge freezer I wanted online somewhere. So I called whirlpool, and they told me it had not been disscontinued, and was infact instock at........ yes you guessed it, Comet!

I refuse to shop instore where I live now. I won't tar the whole Company with this one bad apple, but it makes you think how far they will go with lies to sell you a product.

OK people its been sorted and i have a replacement TV, Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!

I sent comet customer services this email.....
Could you please tell me why i have been refused a replacment TV or loan of a TV
over Xmas. Mine has broken down and is waiting collection to go into your
workshop and i have been refused a replacment or even a loan. Bought from comet
on the 29/12/2005, broke on the 05/12/2005, unable to collect untill 19/12/2005.
    Job number 9888737

Under the 'The Sale of Goods Act 1979 (as amended)',

All items must be 'Satisfactory quality' covering all minor and cosmetic
defects as well as substantial problems. It also means that products must last a
    'reasonable time'

All goods bought after 31 March 2003 that proves defective within 6 months of
purchase, there is a presumption that they were defective when they were bought,
in which case the seller is in breach of contract (section14 Sale of Goods Act).
The customer is entitled to a refund or a replacment.

please be aware that a copy of this message is being kept for my future
reference as adviced by Trading standards.

    AND got this one back.........
    Thank you for your e-mail

I have spoken to the service centre manager and we have agreed to write your
television off. The service centre will be contacting you today to inform you
of the write off number, once you have this if you take it to your local store
you will be entitled to a exchange.

I trust this meets with your approval.

So a result in the end, no apology though for being lied to on the phoned by customer services and having to quote the law to get them to act or being made to wait over a week without a TV when it could have been sorted out in a day, but a result

My advice to anyone would be to not buy anything from comet! I have bought something from there that broke down as did a friend and the so called customer service was the worst ive ever encountered!

Is that why your friend broke down?

    I'll get my coat ................

So happy you got a replacement, seems like Comet caved in!

I have had a problem with my TV i bought from Powerhouse, broke down 4 times in the first year everytime they kept telling me it was fixed, same thing would occur agian and again. Refused to do a replacement. My TV is now 13 motnhs old so they wont touch it now. I wrote letters to them threatning trading standards, legal actions but didnt work. In the end I turened to JVC (manufacturer) who collceted it and agreed to repair it with their engineers, at their cost. Its being delivered tomorrow, fingers crossed, problem is rectified!

If you have been having continual problems with a product, particularly if it is a recurring problem then you are still protected under the sale of goods act even if it is outside of the initial warranty period (simply because it is reasonable to expect it to last more than a few months).

I would have demanded a replacement long before now, but if it breaks down again then tell them that they have had 5 goes at fixing it (detail exact dates and times if possible) and you are no longer willing to accept another repair since it is obvious the product is not fit for purpose.

I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • I for one refuse to buy anything from Comet ever again no matter how much cheaper an item is in their stores. Their customer service dept in Leeds is absolute rubbish, and I mean RUBBISH!!! are you listening COMET or should I say COMIC
