Am I on emergency tax?

Right ok.
On part 1 of your p45 you should have it on the front - the figures.
If you were on BR this indicates that you have more than one source of income and/or two or more jobs. You would of been paying alot of tax on this rate. Have you got another pension or something with someone else? Often this is why you are on this rate.Ie.... ex navy or army pension.
I would give the tax office a ring. make sure you quote the PAYE tax reference number which the payroll office at your work can give you.
By the sounds of it you have been paying too much tax....this can be reactified by ringing the tax office and making sure your work aren't putting you on the month 1 if they have the figures!0 -
right okay guys, ill give my local tax office a ring and see what happens0
-
Fingers crossed for you - and i am sure your net pay will increase soon by the sounds of your situation.
PM if you remeber, let me know how you get on.0 -
well hopefully, £181 deductions is alot of cash, some agency workers dont even take home this which is abit crappy0

Hi can anybody tell me why I am on tax code 589L when all my work mates are on 603L.... my previous tax code was 529L. I have been with the same company for about 3 years and have not changed any of my working hours. Thanks in advance0

Only you can really.
The likely explanation is that you have some source of untaxed income (or owe tax from an earlier year) that is being collected by a reduction in your tax code.
Your tax office will be able to tell you if the above doesn't ring a bell. It could be something that is a hangover from the past.
Your working hours have nothing to do with it.0 -
Hi thanks for the reply...I have no other source of untaxed income and as far as I know I do not owe any tax
I have rang my tax office this morning and he asked me the usual security questions...then asked if I had ever made a claim for family tax credits...which I haven't. He then said he was sorry but I need to write to the local tax office as he couldn't go any further as I had failed the security question!!! and I need do get them to update my details??
I have posted a letter to them this morning and will wait to see what they sayIf it turns out they have the wrong information am I going to end up paying more or less tax....i'm really confused now

You will have a P2 (Coding Notice) issued by HMRC either for the 529L (at the start of the year - likely dated Jan 08) and / or (less likely) for the 589L from Sept. The Notice will clearly show why £140 of allowances has been deducted. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

If you really don't owe any back tax then it's a mistake and you should land up paying less tax when it's sorted out.0 -
sorted mine out this morning, they did have my p45 but it showed no earnings for tax year so wanted to know any income i received etc. I had to ring up job center cause i was claiming jsa when i moved from luton to bolton untill i got work but this was irrelevant as i stopped claiming on the 14th feb 08 and started my current job on the 6th may. So from the tax year start april 06 to start of my new job i received £0.
They were happy enough with the info and said they will get it sorted and issue my employer with the correct tax code and im assuming ill get any money owed0
