Am I on emergency tax?

My tax code is 603L and my previous code (I think) was 543L. Someone at work has seen that and told me I'm on emergency tax and should see about claiming it back - I thought 603L was the standard tax code... isn't it?

Am I on emergency tax? I don't think so as it means I'd have been on it for 2 years:confused:

I think 603L is the new code brought in after the 10% tax thing to replace the 543L tax code. HTH

That's what I thought - that it was just the normal basic tax code.

    Thanks BB:T

603L can also be the emergency code. You would need to look at your Coding Notice to check (P2 normally issued Jan 08). But if you haven't changed jobs recently .... your 603L is likely to be precisely the same as the 603L that most of us possess.

If Emergency code - most would carry a Week 1 or Month 1 after the code (non-cumulative). And that's where it can make a practical difference to the standard 603L. But some are cumulative ..... if you've completed a P46 and indicated this is your first employment in the year.
If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !

    this week pay slip shows

    Gross Taxable: £621.60
    PAYE Tax : £101.00
    NIC: £56.83

    Total Payments: £621.60
    Total Deductions: £186.83
    Net Pay: £434.77
  • Bang on MikeYorks.

603L is the normal standard code. this means you can earn 6030 pounds before paying tax.

You could be paying slightly more tax if you have just changed jobs. If you are on 603L 1 - this means you will be charaged as though this is the only month you will work in the year, thus charged slightly more tax.

If you have any problems give the tax office a ring, i know its a pain but you have to pester them !

i would not say recently no, i started in may and before this was working for an agency and before this another company although went 3 months not working due to moving from luton to bolton
  • generally week 1 or month is where your current employer has not had

the previous tax to date and taxable pay to date

to help work out your correct tax which you should be paying.

Do you know what happened to your P45 when starting with this company? Was it late coming in?

I would say this is where the biggest clue lies - your P45
