Hi - I originally posted this in the wrong bit.
This is long winded but i'll try to keep it short without missing anything out.
Me and my husband bought our current house in Sept 2006 worth £185k mortgaged £160k we both had very well paid jobs and we were very comfortable. In Feb 2007 I was paralysed in a medical accident which also caused a bleed on my brain. My husband carried on working and we had carers coming in looking after me. In June 2008 I elected to have my bowel removed (it had stopped functioning) and i had a ileostomy formed. My husband took 5 weeks off work to look after me but was made redundant (he's a builder). We have insurance to pay the mortgage. (there messing us around)
Our dilemma is were struggling like mad. There's no jobs out there for my husband. We can not sell and buy something smaller. The house has been fully adapted (through a council grant and you only get that once) I have spoken to the council and they have said there is no suitable properties for us to go into so we would be split up. I would have to go into sheltered accommodation and my husband and son would have to go into a B & B. We have been informed that my settlement will be 7 figures but it's going to take upto 5 years. My solicitor is working on a interim payment but it wont be till next year at least. I have spoken to the Mortgage company and sent them all the proof of the accident in case we fall behind (we are upto date) My husband is panicing. I'm not too worried because i think we should pay half the mortgage cost and if they want to repossess I'm sure that no judge in the land would turf us out with what we've been through. Considering that there will be substantial money owed to us.
What would you do? Any advice would be great. The citizens advice have been useless. I suppose there is no easy answer.
The current market is not great and i'm sure we would just about get back what we paid for the house in 2006. Our mortgage is with northern Rock.
What we pay.
£833.00 Mortgage
Payment insurance currently pays us £1100 a month so leaves us with just under £300, I am on Incapicity and DLA both at the higher rate and my husband gets income support and carers allowance £60 a week. We have debts of around 30k which we pay £1.00 token payment to every month.
I can not work due to memory loss and confusion that's not to mention all the other problems.
I bet you are reading this thinking "That woman must have been Jack the Ripper in a past life................ (that's what i think)
Thanks in advance.:A I'm sure i have posted this in the wrong bit. But i can not change it

Hi didabunce
Sorry to hear about the accident and the jobloss.
Can you post up a statement of affairs so we can see exactly what the income, expenditure and debts are? We may be able to suggest some areas in which you can make savings.

Hi
There may be a number of options. Cetainly post up the SOA.
Please get benefit advice as you should get the interest on the mortgage paid out.
If the worst comes to the worst, it is always possible that you could go bankrupt and still keep the house.
Going to ask an OP to have a look in as well.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

I know these are always helpful but i just wanted to make you aware of some things.
Benefits are mine and husbands together
I have a motability car so no costs involved but i lose that part of my benefit
£1100 is the insurance paying out we've had 3 months so far
Gas is a really high cost, there is nothing i can do to bring that down, I have a severe spinal cord injury so I am always freezing cold.
Sky is high due to two boxes i spend alot of time in bed while my husband and son are down stairs. I know how people feel about sky but please bear in mind i am paralysed, we don't have a social life, smoke or drink. We haven't had a holiday, birthday presents or christmas since this happened. Sky is literally my only enjoyment (I love true movies, it makes me feel less tragic)
Our food costs are high but i get through a ridiculous amount of wet-wipes and bleach. (i wont go into too much detail)
In 18 months i've spent alot of time in hospital it was very expensive. I was in hospital an hour and half away travel costs were scary. So the food costs if there is anything over really works out about right taking into account hospital.
Water - i curse the day that i agreed to a water meter.
The majority of our debts have been agreed at £1.00 a month. There is actually 8 of them not 1.
Thanks again :-)0 -

I'm not an expert on these things, but I'll give you some recycled advice while you wait for other people.
I have a feeling that as you presumably use more water than average due to the ileostomy needing extreme hygiene you may be entitled to a capped water bill, not sure where you find out about this though. Also for gas and electric you might be able to get on their "vulnerable people" lists (I think mostly for old people but I can't see why you can't be on there too), which should mean they can help you out a bit more.
Glad the insurance is paying out the way it should, how long will it last?
I see why you may need Sky, but I think it could be possible to negotiate a deal that would include you landline, broadband and TV with Sky or possibly Virgin?
Food bill is high, but you're obviously not including just food in there. It may be possible to cut down the food part of the bill by meal planning and shopping online (reduces temptation). Perhaps occasional bulk buys for the wet wipes and bleach would be cheaper if you're using so many.

Hiya,
Not much to add, except that British Gas and BT both offer reduced rates to people on certain benefits. Other suppliers may do too, so probably worth checking out if you haven't already.
Has your husband got any support in looking for work? Many carers associations have employment projects that can help.
Lastly, I'm so impressed by your ability to stay so positive. Your attitude to your situation will help so many others I'm sure.
Good luck

Sorry forgot to say in the previous post that there are apparently sites that let you earn vouchers and sometimes money for filling out surveys and clicking links (unfortunately I don't have the links), but it could help with Christmas and birthdays.MFW #66 - £4800 target0

Thanks
I have been in touch with N-power and registered with them about my situation, but it's made no difference to my bills. Is is worth moving to british gas?
The water bill is £50 a month and comes out of my husbands Income support I still owe considerally more. This was mainly to do with before the ileostomy i had to use an irrigation system to empty my bowel (not pleasant) it's a bit easier now. But water consumption is alot. I take alot of showers to try and get warm.
I have just agreed to move to BT to take advantage of Sky's broadband. Hopefully that will bring that cost down.
My food/cleaning bill is high because I also Self-catherise and cleaning products are with that it's not just food. I don't actually buy that much food i don't eat much (due to not much moving about). But, we buy loads of bleach as i use a commode upstairs. (my bathroom is adapted downstairs).
Sorry if that urgh to some.
We intend to try bulk buy this month the insuance people agreed today to pay another month so i'm a little more relaxed now.
We do internet shopping and we have milk/bread delivered by the milkman, it stops us going to the shops and buying chocolate and cakes. (my indulgence)
The main problem with my husband looking for work is that he needs to bring home at least £1400 a month to be able to pay the mortgage/council tax and keep us going. There's no jobs out there at the moment they are all paying £6ph.
The insurance goes for a year. But, they are getting slower every month at paying.
I wish we had an easy answer.
Oh, I've filled in the forms for housing benefit but, i believe they only pay interest upto £100k. It's been a while may-be i should chase them up.
I have no emotional attachment to this house, I hate living here. to get this sick straight after moving in you can't help feeling there is something wrong with the house. I just do not want us to be split up if we do lose this place.
Thanks again. Any suggestion is of great help.0 -
Have you spoken to your doctor or district nurse about getting some of the wipes and things on prescription which you shouldn't be paying for?, you should be able to get a lot of this free due to your medical needs, it's worth a tryAug GC £63.23/£200, Total Savings £00
