Broken laptop

Hi this is my first post on here so i am hoping that someone can help me.

My daughters laptop has just stopped working and have no reason why but i rang currys to see when the warranty ends as i couldn't find my receipt and they told me it ended about 2 weeks ago so i asked about an extended warranty to get the laptop fixed and they said no i couldn't do that, so then i asked how much it would cost to get it fixed and they said it will cost £120 just for someone to look at it, there is no way i can afford that or to buy a new laptop.

Please there must be some way around this as she needs it for school work and i really can not afford a new one.

Thanks in advance for any help

Vikki

Oh forgot to mention that we got a new AC adaptor in June as the other one was broken so i don't think it's that.

  • its a shame you arent closer to me, i run and IT support company and we offer a no fix no fee policy. there must be somebody like that near you.
If you came to us we would send an engineer to you to see if he could fix it, if not he would bring it back to the office where we would attempt to retrieve all the data on a cd or dvd. Then we would attempt to fix it. If we could but it required parts we would tell you what it needed and give you a price but also advise you to look for cheaper prices, we try and buy at the cheapest possible and add nothing on. We normally charge a fixed fee for this type of repair and it is under £100 inc vat. If we cant fix it we wouldnt charge you but we would give you the cd or dvd with your data on. The biggest problem is that laptops and pc's are getting cheaper to buy then to repair. I know in this climate thats not always the case.

This could be any number of things do you get any lights whatsoever and boot noises etc, have you tried removing the battery and powering up without it in, checked the fuse in the power supply, let us know what you have tried and maybe we can help you.

Do you have any other way of checking when you bought it as they may just be telling you its out of warranty by 2 weeks to get them 'off' the hook.By the way alot of laptops now come with 2 years warranty,so check that out aswell.
  • apologies, im not trying to advertsie my own business but giving advice that it should be possible to get somebody to at least look at the laptop for free. Knowing what i offer would help her negotiate. but yes although im trying to be honourable it appears i have broken the rules. Apologies.
What happens when you try and turn the laptop on?
Have you tried removing the battery and just use the power lead?
is there any noises lights when you power the laptop on?
Do you have a home pc? if so disconnect the monitor and plug it itno the back of the laptop, it might be the screen that has died.
The more information you can give the bettre idea we will have.

Wan2Lan - how do you earn a living?

OP - Take it back and insist it is fixed under the Sale of Goods Act - a pc should last longer than 54 weeks...

does the light on the power supply light up even when not connected to laptop?
does it warm up if there is no light on it?
it might be the power connector inside the case has become damaged or dislodged if the external power supply is working okay.
I did mine myself for the £7 it cost to buy a new connector and lots of looking at instructions online.
  • The power supply has been plugged in all day and it hasn't even gotten a bit warm am getting no lights or sounds absolutly nothing, just need a power supply to try out so i can see if it is that and if it is then i can buy a new 1 but its the just not knowing whats wrong
  • just felt it and it is a bit warm so dont know if that means its working or not and that its the laptop thats broke?? my daughter said she was on the other night when the battery started flashing that it was low so she plugged the power lead in to charge it up but nothing happened so obviously when the battery went it couldnt be turned on hope that helps
