Do you have the chimney? and what do you have at the moment? Is there a fire place. Is your chimney lined. The fireplace may be the least of your cost. I had a new open fire installed (built) about 4 years ago when the old fire bricks started to fall appart. The cost was arround £250 just to rebuild the existing fire bricks and lay a new hearth. Its not a particularly easy thing to do as you need to get the shape right to maximise the up draft.

Sorry if this seems to be negative but you did not give enough info in your post

  • thanks,

i have a stone fireplace which was there when i moved in,( ex council house )

It is boarded up just now but i know its a 16" set i need, i dont think my chimney is blocked.

What do you mean by having the chimney lined? i just assumed, put in the fire and burn some coal, i obv understand i mey need it cleaned befor i burn.

    thanks
  • just looked up 'chimney lined' makes sense, i never thought of that , thanks for the info.

I have no idea the state of the chimney or what class it is, the property is pre 1960 so i will prob have a class 1,

Think i will un-block the fire and get it checked before buying a fire.

you may have saved me a few quid by just telling me that info

    Cheers

I doubt if you'll save money this way, unless you have a cheap source of coal.

  • 'paper-bricks' i get loads of junk mail, i can fill my paper bin twice, have to take some to the recycle depot before my bin is emptyed.

and im going to ask my friends/family for their unwanted paper,

Might take me a wee bit of time to make them, but if it saves me a few pound, better in my pocket than my gas provider!!!!!! they get enough

If the chimney is ok and has been tested you could try ebay this is where mine came from .My coal costs me around £200 a year it is cheaper if you buy in the summer I have 3 fires in my house multi fuel stove in the back, open fire in the front and open fire in the bedroom I do not use central heating so it does work out cheaper than gas .
