Work Placement And Travelling

Can I just seek some clarification before jumping in with my tuppence worth.
You say that she has to visit different clients in different locations.
How often does this happen?
Does she have an official base, e.g an office where she spends much/some of her time?
Do other members of staff get reimbursed for their travel on duty?
Rarely is travelling to and from your work classed as working so I don't see why she should be seeking any recompense for that anyway.
Does she have a contract that she could get any useful info or guidance from?0 -
Really WOW! In case you didn't understand my opening post, I am asking whether this is right, not what people think my daughter should be doing, I am on about the legal side of things. So perhaps posters can keep their views to themselves if they have no positive contribution to make.
I don't there there is anything illegal going on, since that seems to be what concerns you.0 -

She has an office which is supposed to be her base, but they send her out to various places, she is not asking about expense of travel to her regular place of work. The problem is where they are sending her to work requires 2-2.5hours of travel each way. They send her to different place every 2 weeks. Other members are much older and been with the company for a number of years, got company cars and get overtime.0 -

Seems right to me, a lot of jobs require a lot of work, and like a lot of people i work 12-14 hours days with out overtime, it's a contract but i get good enough rewards and enjoy my job.
if she can't take the pressure at 20 what is she going be like when she gets into the role full time. better look at a career change i think...The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
Does she get sent during here "9 - 5 " time?
How is she expected to get to the clients?
How long is she at the other place(s)?
She cannot be expected to pay for her business travel so she needs to resolve this.0 -
firstly did your daughter know about the travel before she took the placement?
secondly, its called work EXPERIENCE. if she really wants this job when she leaves uni then this is what her life will possibly be like for the next 40years! she'll have to get used to it! if she cant stick it now when shes 20 and has (im assuming) no responsibilites such as a family etc to take care of then maybe she should reconsider what she's doing.
unpaid hours after work are a fact of life in most jobs however you stick with it in the hope you will get your overtime paid in a salary rise for your COMMITMENT.
im guessing no-one is forcing her to stay after hours, she could easily get up and walk out but she knows she needs to get the job done.
she should also be able to claim travel expenses to and from clients addresses however no they shouldnt pay for a taxi home for her. they would only have to pay for her to get back to the office then its up to her. it would be like me asking my employer to pay for my bus pass to work. it just doesnt happen. other members of staff get perks because they have shown COMMITMENT and SACRIFICE in their careers. she needs to ask about expenses etc.:j TTC from September 08 / BFP November 08 / EDD 22nd July 09 :jOH's debt as of Sept 08 - £15,000 / Nov 08 - £13,5000 -

No she is expected to be at the clients office by 9 until 7pm in some cases until 8pm, she needs bus, train, walk to another station train and a bus then walk to the clients office, just over 2-2.5 hours and do the same in the evening.0 -
unfortunatly, it seems that she needs a car for this job! maybe something to think about for when she graduates. No she is expected to be at the clients office by 9 until 7pm in some cases until 8pm, she needs bus, train, walk to another station train and a bus then walk to the clients office, just over 2-2.5 hours and do the same in the evening.
if she had one, she'd probably be able to claim milage and fuel expenses.:j TTC from September 08 / BFP November 08 / EDD 22nd July 09 :jOH's debt as of Sept 08 - £15,000 / Nov 08 - £13,5000 -
If she incurs costs in addition to her normal travel to work then she should be reimbursed for these. No questions asked.
She needs to speak to her boss/HR dept about this.
If she is unsure perhaps she could ask the innocent question of does she need receipts for all her travel and is it all right to submit her expenses just once a week?
While I think work experience and placements are a good thing in principle, I do object to people getting abused by employers. The hours are long but not outrageous.0
